Herbert Coward, who played the role of "Toothless Man" in the movie "Deliverance" died in a car crash in western North Carolina this week, state officials said. The actor was 85.

The fatal two-vehicle wreck Wednesday took place after Coward pulled out onto U.S. Route 19 in front of a truck, North Carolina Highway Patrol Sgt. M.J. Owens confirmed to USA TODAY Thursday night.

The crash occurred after Coward, and his 78-year-old girlfriend Bertha Brooks, left a doctor's appointment, according to The Associated Press.

Brooks, a Chihuahua and pet squirrel inside the car, also died in the crash, the outlet reported.

Coward, who lived in Haywood County, was "famous locally for having a pet squirrel" Owens told The Associated Press.

Iconic. A lot of people don’t realize this but in Alabama his fecal matter was used as currency. At Brian Dennehy stadium you could get dipping dots with it.

RIP.

The story I heard was that Burt Reynolds saw him at a rodeo once which was the inspiration to cast him in the movie.

He made a couple appearances on Moonshiners a couple seasons ago. He was the caretaker for a defunct ghost town attraction in the mountains up there. Mark and Digger dealt with him. He had his squirrel with him on the show, I believe.

ETA: I'm pretty certain it was him. It is hard to find the episode with the news of his death taking up the search results.

When I was growing up, one of our neighbors ran a tree service. He would "rescue" baby squirrels from nests in trees he was about to take down and raise them. He had a huge screened in front porch and kept them there. I think at one time he had 6 or 8 of them.

I always suspected he just kind of wandered out of the woods onto the set and the director just kept the cameras rolling. But that could be said for most of the cast in that film.
