Helping others right now if you are able

I’ve debated on whether I should post this or not. With so many negative things coming out during the past few weeks, I figured I would share only in the hopes that it would inspire some of you to help others if you are able. There are a lot of elderly people and children that are struggling out there and it isn’t very hard to find them.
For the past 3 weeks my wife (no pics) and my 13 year old daughter (don’t even think about it) have been packing brown bag lunches on Fridays and driving around neighborhoods that we know have children that are largely unsupervised and in need of some food and encouragement. It has grown from 25 bags the first week to over 50 bags last week. It includes food, snacks and sometimes a small toy. My wife and daughter really enjoy interacting with the kids (and sometimes their parents), but my wife said sometimes it really upsets her to see how some of these kids are living.
This led to her posting on a local FB page asking if anyone knows elderly people or children that need help. We have delivered groceries to around 15 families and even had Rouses or Walmart deliver to families that are further away than what we want to travel. Almost all of the families have been very grateful, and we will not judge why they are in their current predicament, because it doesn’t matter to us really. Some of the families we delivered to even gave us packs of water or other things that they had to help donate even though they obviously didn’t have much as far as material things.
Again, just wanted to post this to encourage anyone that can help out your community to do so. It’s not hard to find the people that need help and there are several ways to do it.

That is awesome.
My wife and 6 year old daughter have been sewing masks for the last 4 weeks. Wife is working from home a full 8-10 (TWSS) hours a day, but spends countless hours in front of that sewing machine. So many that I had to remind her for the first time in a while about the secks.
She is a shining example of what I wish this world was. Its not in her DNA to think of herself first, and that's what I love most about her.
ETA: Just made a run to Women's Hospital this morning with her latest shipment of masks that will go to 16 more nurses there.

thought we had to leave the schools open to feed these kids?

I think doing this is a great example of actually helping people in need and we need more people like you doing that sort of thing. Too many times celebrities and other people think donating random money to causes is the way to go but after the flood I really saw that doing something directly for a family was way more helpful than sending money to the redcross or things like that. Nice job.

I guess most schools are, but a lot of the parents aren't bringing them. Again, not for us to judge.

The schools are not open. There’s a nonprofit feeding over 30k kids across south Louisiana via mobile trucks every single day. The governor has endorsed and given them money to do this.
I may or may not work for their sister company.
Great thing you’re doing, OP. Namely the focus on the elderly. They need help too and they often don’t have anyone to help.

That's awesome. Serious question because I wouldn't mind following your example: how do you find these neighborhoods/areas? Do you just pack a bunch of lunches in a car and drive around to poorer parts of town and look for people walking around? I'd hate to come across like I'm assuming someone needs charity just because of where they live. Am I overthinking?

We were very familiar with the neighborhood that we first went into, so that helped us. You need to be careful to make sure you don't put yourself into a dangerous situation if you aren't familiar with the area. My suggestion is ask a local church or find a local FB page and start asking around. Some people aren't comfortable just driving around passing out stuff, so a good alternative is maybe finding a family or two and bringing groceries to them or having them delivered after making contact with them.

Thumbs up to you.
The same People That complain about the government giving handouts, are the ones that won’t lift a finger for a person in need.
Many on the left want to turn the government into a giant charity to take away the deductibility for us to give through charity.

Not if she hasn't been around anyone other than her mother and myself for 4 weeks. Her mother was teaching her one of the most important lesson in life, IMO. We have saved enough to be comfortable through this, and we enjoy helping out where we can. Voluntary charity is one of the most beautiful things in the world.
