And nobody has said an exercise ball.
Bouncing on one of those frickers with a crying baby is a miracle.
And Vaseline. All. ALL the basic skin issues will be resolved with Vaseline.
Buy some coffee so you don't run out. First couple weeks will be non-stop.
Thermometer. Fevers are the baby killers (or signs thereof)

Someone mentioned bottle warmer. Skip that and save yourself some serious hassle. We used one with the first, but then if you're out of the house, you've got to find a place to warm bottles or carry warm water, etc. And baby becomes picky, expecting warm bottle ASAP. Same goes for wipes warmer, though the second baby hated cold wipes with a passion.
Second baby, we started her on cold bottles (or at most about 10 seconds in microwave). Least picky baby ever. Drank it cold, warm, whatever, it was awesome.
Also with first baby, we eventually chucked that bottle warmer crap after about 4 months anyway and started using microwave for 22 seconds or so. Just slowly turn bottle up and down about 5 times like a rain stick to mix temp pockets, don't shake like a Polaroid picture.

Don't spend a ton on the monitor, all you really need is one for noise.
One for noise may be all you need, but the video monitor we have is extremely nice. We use it constantly.

This book also sums up what you will be feeling while rocking your kid to sleep every three hours. I had the night shift when he was still in that phase, so I had a lot of sleepless nights.

Thanks to all for the good advice and the few good jokes. I'm sure we already have too much but you know how it goes. I won't listen and get more then later in life I will tell others "you have too much you won't use any of that".

Which is why I'm a huge advocate of cosleeping. Some will argue about safety, and it's not like you sleep in your bed with a huge comforter, but it was a game changer for us.
Society, mostly through pop culture, paints this picture for us of how its gonna be. Parents rock, then put baby down in Baby's room, mother get 2hrs of sleep across the house, and repeat all night. This is what we did for our first two kids until we wizened up.
Before kid three, we went to lazy boy and got the best recliner for my wife. Rocks, reclines, feet go up. My wife slept in this recliner with the baby (and breast fed there) and never got less than 5hrs of sleep the first six months.

Don't buy a breast pump. Rent one for those Medela Symphony double pumps from the hospital or a place that rents them.
Also, some insurance companies now days send you one as part of your coverage. It's a new provision in the ACA.

Save your money for a wet nurse
Having a six week old, I can say this is the best. It ain't cheap. Also, I have 6 different devices on the floor in front of me for swinging or sleeping and none of them work. She still cries constantly. Hoping for light at end of the tunnel.

We co-sleep if he wakes up after 3-4 a.m. Since I'm getting up within the hour. Or if I'm just to lazy to get him down in the middle of the night. It's not because of safety at this age(he's 10 months), but because we don't want him to get addicted. My cousin has a 3 year old that still can only sleep with them. My son was extremely tough sleep wise until 3 months. My wife stayed home with him all day, so I'd sleep on the couch with his little travel cradle that vibrated right next to me. I'd rock it for a while until he passed out and get my sleep until he was up 3 hours later. At that point my sister gave us a Merlins Magic Sleep Suit. Game changer. He started sleeping through the night from then on and only has trouble about once a week or when he supposedly going through big developmental milestones. Weened him off of the suit after 2-3 months.

Didn't read whole thread, but I started swaddling my chaps immediately and they slept well. The swaddle pouches that you zip and then velcro are awesome. It seems like mine slept better when swaddled.

My son has never liked to be swaddled. He would fight all night until I finally just told my wife to try to let him sleep without it. He will be 3 months old this week and has been sleeping from about 8:30 to 6:30 every night for about 6 weeks. Best thing is to find out what works for your child and do that. I also started him off from when we brought him home to nap in the living room with the tv on normal level and talk at a normal tone. He now sleeps through noise at restaurants and it is nice that a gnat fart doesn't wake the baby up.

So far we love the rock n play and boppie thing. The swaddler things are very nice. Just really need diapers, wipes, clothes, butt paste and a place to sleep.
Doctor told us not to get any movement monitors as they will make you go insane. We came from the NICU so we were a little bit more self aware on what they do during the night and we were confident when they came home. They already had a schedule.
