You are exactly right. I don't understand why some people think it is a point of pride to put their child in a worn out vehicle. If said children are well behaved, responsible, doing all of the right things in life and it poses no financial hardship for the parents, why not put them in the nicest and most reliable option that makes sense?

I mean, if all you can afford is an $8000 beater with 200k miles on it, sure. If you don't mind things are wrong with it, and don't mind the cosmetic damages, and the structural damages, and the engine issues...more power to you, you don't owe anything...until you have to fix it.
But if you were gonna spend 20-30k on a USED car?
Use that as your down payment, get a new one with a great warranty, get your protection packages and rest easy.
When the tires get nails, when the rims get scuffed, when things happen...you call a number and let someone else pay for it.
Try to catch a dealer demo. Babied and discounted and still have warranty.
Hell my wheel and tire package already paid for itself

get a final price, better known as 'Out The Door Pricing' that is itemized and in writing.
Where are you doing business that you don't get this once you choose a vehicle?

Forget the monthly payment scam, that is where a person gets screwed royally.
Oh yes, the "scam" where you buy something you might not be able to afford outright, today, with someone else's money, and pay a fee (that can range from 0% to whatever) to do that.
Yes, people with shitty credit have to pay more, but that's their own damn fault. If you have good credit, you are maximizing the value of your time and money.
Sure. If you just happened to have 30k on hand, awesome you might be able to buy a basic car.
But if you can get sub 5% interest, if you instead invested that 30k, even modest 8% dividends are gonna be more than enough to offset.
It's like playing with house money.
Just requires discipline. And then you can aggressively pay down a loan to decrease the amount of interest you pay, all the while increasing your credit score.
Or you can just go with the old school "if you can't buy it cash you get nothing" and go through life with other people's problems. And when you need to finance something...to bad you don't have the credit history

Used Honda accords are 30k now? What the frick?!
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised since Chevy charges as much for a Tahoe now as a Range Rover
Every passing day our world becomes more and more clown like.

Do you realize that the F&I loves folks that sign without negotiating a bottom line price before they add all the BS extra fees into the deal? They make OT $$ from folks like that. They add all they BS fees at the last minutes before you sign on the dotted line. Sometimes unknowingly to the buyer, sleazy yes, but once that contract is signed, the buyer is stuck
So here is you a few tips:
Car salesman are trained from day one to ask certain questions like:
'What brings you into today?"
"What do you do for a job/living?"
"What monthly payment can do you need?"
"Do you have a trade-in?"
"Will you be financing with us?"
These are not random questions, the salesman, F&I are sizing you up to try and squeeze EVERY extra dollar of profit out of you.
That's why you do NOT discuss all those things until you get a out-the-door price on the vehicle in writing.
Unless you want to give the sale man, the F&I guy and the sales manager a vacation at your expense have at it.
And actually, its better to negotiate a deal on vehicle via E-mail or over the phone and have the final price in an Email before you step onto the car lot.

Way too many miles. You can easily get a car with about 15-20k miles on it, still under warranty for that budget. Just be patient and shop nationwide.

There’s a car in the link.
You could buy that one.
What’s the problem?

Oh boy! Gee Golly mister! Thank you for your wisdom!

'What brings you into today?"
Well I came to the car lot to buy an excavator and a truffle hunting pig, but while I'm here...
I'd like a 3 row SUV with ventilated seats, a surround view camera and AWD.
Of course they're going to ask you what you want...so you can find the right vehicle.
quote:
"What do you do for a job/living?"
"Oh I'm unemployed, but I sell macaroni art of minor league baseball players on the side."
If you couldn't afford a 10-year-old Nissan kicks how would it serve them to put you on the most expensive car in the lot?
Seems to me it's a question to steer you towards vehicles, you might actually be able to afford.
quote:
"What monthly payment can do you need?"
If someone has $1000 for a down payment and wants a $500 note, how would it serve anyone to stick them on a Range Rover?
Believe it or not, dealerships do want to sell vehicles, not waste everyone's time.
quote:
"Do you have a trade-in?"
Again, how is this question anything but prudent? If you've got a trade, it makes perfect sense to start the appraisal asap. Figure out if you own it outright or if you are $15000 flipped on your Mitsubishi financed for 84 months 3 years ago.
Again, who wants to waste time? The value of a trade in shouldn't affect the value of a vehicle you want to buy.
quote:
"Will you be financing with us?"
What a crazy question!? You mean the people that do the financing want to know if you're going to have outside financing, pay cash, or finance with them? Wow.
Are there shady shitty dealerships? Yes. Are there shitty sleazy pushy sales guys? Yes, is it everyone's experience? It wasn't mine for sure.
Do you go into every store or restaurant and argue the price? Demand discounts? You are free to negotiate free to take advantage of whatever offers are on hand, rebates, rates. But at the end of the day, they want to sell you a vehicle and you wanna buy one so you find a price of vehicle you're happy with and a note you're comfortable paying and there you go.
Believe it or not being reasonable and not a dick will get you a lot farther than thinking you know everything and they haven't seen 1000 of you come through the doors. I was able to get a vehicle in a price I wanted, coverage and warranties I wanted, at a price that I didn't mind at all and a rate it was very good and I got it by not being an a-hole and being reasonable.
And I didn't have to waste hours and hours of my time to accomplish it

The reason Bower has had it so long is b/c he's upside down on it himself and needs a bigger down payment than most people wanna pay b/c of the years/miles/options vs what the banks will lend. When I first read your post I thought this boy was around 16 and working his first job. Just give him a bunch of money for a down payment and maybe you won't hear from him for 10 years

If you feel that way perhaps leave out the Step part and just call him your son..

You really are Obtuse
That was actually one of my more acute moments. You didn't edit the post, and the thread continues to be sidetracked by people talking about providing the money to buy cars for kids.
