A 55 gallon tank with guppies in your living room is trashy. A 150 gallon reef tank would not be. I almost went with a reef tank a few years back and regret not doing it. Instead I got back into snakes. After dumping $5,000 into my snakes and cages, I regret not doing the reef tank. If I knew I was going put that much into it, I would have gone reef tank.

Had one for years, very calming, would watch it instead of TV. Miss it at times. Had mostly African cichlids, beautiful fish with the downside that they liked to dig everything up.

Fish Tank in living room, trashy?

not if you like your living room smelling like a swamp

its amazing how many people with aquariums dont notice the swamp smell that always comes along with it

I was in a customer's home the other day, and I saw they had a built in aquarium between their home office and the main living area. It was a saltwater setup, and it was straight-up legit. It doubled the viewing area--instead of having the aquarium up against a wall like most are.

You could see through to both sides though, so it would definitely not work for me--what with my YouPorn fetish and all.

Yes. I like tanks too. Move it to an office or less public space.

Even a well kept saltwater tank in the living room gives off that vibe like you just got drafted into the league and bought your first house.

Bookshelves of hardwood, waxed or polyurethaned. Shelves adjustable. Arranged by topic. Minimum paperbacks. Minimum fiction.

Space on shelves for book collection to expand.

And at least two leather chairs with reading lamps. Wooden blinds to match the book cases. Silk oriental carpets. Maybe a matching gun rack under lock and key.

What kind of snakes you got? I was big into Monitors and tegus for about a decade, but eventually sold them all off and decided to take up a new hobby.

I love rainbow boss and carpets. Are your carpet pythons real aggressive?

I’ve had tanks since highschool and not one of them smelled. Regular maintenance and a half decent filter will prevent any odors. Your friends probably over feed.

Fresh water can be pretty cool too. I had a 55 gal in college with a bunch of African Cichlids. They are about as colorful as it gets for fresh but as others have said, they are aggressive and tear up tanks.

I have two nano reef tanks. One in the corner of my living room and one at my office.

Tanks are not trashy IF they are extremely well kept they are good looking (the actual tank/stand) and in in most cases have lots of coral.....this is also a lot of work. You can hire people who come in a few times a month to maintain properly.

Also remember if you live in the south Louisiana area that gets hit with hurricanes, if you leave and are out of power for weeks you are coming home to a nightmare.

I had a roommate a while back who had a tank with a bunch of yellow cichlids, among others. Those cichlids were little assholes. They would always grabass and mess with the other fish.

There was one runt who had his tail fin chewed off by the bigger fish. He turned ghastly white and had to vigorously spasm to swim, but ended up surviving for two years like that.

This....If it's a big nice salt water tank, then that's ok. Fresh water, not so much.

You can make an african cichilid tank look like a saltwater tank with sand and classier fake coral. It's a HELL of a lot easier than a true salt water tank. 95% of people that view the tank will assume it's saltwater.

The key to a classy tank is set-up... anything built into a wall is better than looking than pine stands. (obviously). Also, lighting... saltwater tanks generally have better looking LED lights, but nothing stops someone from using these with cichlids. Go pool filter sand instead of rocks substrate. The cichlids will enjoy moving it all around.

Both of my Carpets are very tame, as is the Rainbow. The Green Tree Python will puff up and hiss if you approach him, but never snaps. Got both of the Carpets when they were a few months old, and neither has ever taken a snap at me. The new Diamond/Jungle cross is nippy though, but I’m sure she’ll grow out of it. I don’t handle them much anyway. They are all in nice sized display cages.
