Jim, my dear friend,
You are spot on. Meteorology is a soft science, much in the vein of sociology and psychology.. Our best minds do not go into these fields. There might be a handful of intelligent meteorologists out there, and I would assume these are the ones who design the computer models that all the lesser meteorologists depend on to guess what the weather is to be. The goalposts are constantly on the move. A few years of amateur model following on the internet puts the average person on about the same level as “professional” meteorologists.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

What day did that last storm hit? A week ago?
And I wont tell you to look at the GFS for 2 weeks from now. I know its too far to be dependable, but....

and when they do say it is going here 2 days out, and it shifts due to an influence that materializes faster, or slower affecting the track - folks like you will bitch about that as well.
Jim, I like you - i think you are a decent poster, but there is no definitive science. there is no definitive answer. all they can do is go "if the influence to the west is slow arriving, it is PCB, if it gets here faster it is Apalachicola - hence the cone.
it is going to shift - models are not going to always be 100% accurate - they can never be that accurate. sure it is guess work, but all they can do is put out - in this cone area prepare.
what people do with the info is on them - yes it sucks evacuating, only to have a storm shift and the area expected gets little - shite happens, but if they didn't warn people to prepare, those same people would bitch that they weren't given enough info to prepare.

They'll even bitch if they're given all the info they need to prepare.

Am I reading it right that in two weeks they have a hurricane just parking in the SW Gulf for like 4 days?

I like you Legend, even if you don't like me. You try to do a good job in these weather threads, even though you have some blind spots, like we all do.

You sir, are a fraud. You claim academic prowess and the need for politeness in our society, yet you lower the academia of weather science to be compared to "internet study."
You are nothing more than a carpetbagger dressed in fantastical musings of plagiarized John Kennedy Toole picaresque novels.

oh I know Legend, I was just trying to make a point.
meteorologists, like most others, are damned if they do and damned if they don't. someone is inevitably going to complain.

And, I have it on good authority that Mother used to be a lady of the night and would often entertain gentleman callers at the family home. Hence, all of the current day whore strangling.*
