What will insurance companies do now? And all those politicians that whined about coastal homes now have it right in their backyard with how much damage happened inland. Welcome to our plight we've been battling since Katrina with insurance increases and flood insurance almost unaffordable.

AccuWeather put its preliminary estimate of the total damage and economic loss at $95 billion to $110 billion. Helene is expected to be one of the costliest storms in U.S. history because of its overwhelming storm surge, winds and flooding, the weather service said.

For those that need it- The Starlink Mini works amazing. Size of a laptop. Can work off smaller battery pack, no router needed.

Just have to have northeasterly sky.

Can get internet and calls over wifi back up.

A co worker on my team lives in Canton, NC. We’ve heard from her but apparently it’s so bad out there. She’s going to be off work for “a long time.”

Feel so bad for everyone out there

That is great info for future disasters but how does it help the people who can't connect to the internet to find out about Starlink?

LINK

Tha Asheville newspaper story linked above has information they've gathered.
That the Swanowa River rose five feet higher than it ever had before.
The location of four grocery stores still open.
Bits and pieces that might help knowing.

Then I guess Augusta’s regional FEMA branch hasn’t gotten the memo because one of my Sailors sent me a screenshot of a message he received from them this morning after I told him to contact FEMA.

How does it work with wind?

I might have a application for it.

oes anyone know the conditions around/on Hurricane Lake (ironic I know) in the Cashiers/Highlands area of NC? Some old acquaintances of my mom retired to a cabin on the lake up there.

Cashiers/Highlands was mostly spared any large scale damage from what I have been told.

Just talked with my parents. They left Asheville and are hearing they may get power back by the end of the week, but their home might not get water back for weeks.

Not sure if that information gels with what people on here have heard.

I saw somewhere that it is kind of screwy right now because damage from Debby is taking precedent on the website, and is the only storm showing up for people in Georgia who go online trying to file. I don't know how true that is, but the person talking about it shared a screenshot showing it.

We have raised 35k so far for the relief effort and all of it will be going directly to people affected.

Also have people helping for a few days hands on to clear trees or debris and serving some hot food up with some restaurants help.

This is what YOU guys are all about.

Proud and humbled to have such a great caffeinated family.

I’ll be fighting onion cutting ninjas all day.

Update - Here are excerpts from my sister's most recent FB post:
After 2 days of cleanup all we have is paths under the debris. Only way off the mountain is if you can crawl through the debris to get to the pass where a helicopter can land. No water but a neighbor has a fresh spring that is flowing, so as soon as he & my next door neighbor can cut a path to his house in the next day or 2 we will have water.
We have enough (bottled) drinking water that should allow us to survive until then… But we will need professional help clearing the road before any vehicles can get in & out of the neighborhood… But it does feel like season one of The Walking Dead- we are all just figuring out how to survive.
The only access into Asheville is I-26 but getting up the mountain is not possible, gasoline is in short supply & cash only, so if you came here right now, there is no access, no infrastructure, & likely no place to stay.

That area and the TN side of the Smokies (Knoxville, Maryville, etc.) dodged the bullet on this one.

Stocking Mill stopped taking money donations, raised $41.4k in a day from coffee customers. FYI, he has done same relief during Kentucky floods 2 years ago and FL hurricane last year. Bought a used SUV for a disabled Vet in TX and drove it to him - this was in July. He buys equipment for disabled veteran jumpers so they can be loaded in jump planes and enjoy jumping again.

This is who he is (owner) and it’s not just lip service. He goes to the disaster and does not give money to 3rd parties it 100% goes to people in need and he takes it to them.

Also, if you know of someone in need on NC (I think Asheville area) then open his tweeter and send a DM to him.
