Problem is I40 had that landslide that shut it down just on the other side of Old Fort. Not sure when it will reopen

That is way up there back towards Erwin. That is the way we come in to go to The Farmer's Daughter IIRC

Yeah we got ours back just in time for football. I had the generator going but that big bitch could wake the dead.

Legend can probably explain why the storm stayed so strong for so long

Like I mentioned earlier 20 years ago same thing was happening when two named storms came through within 10 days of each other. The ground was saturated with water over 400 land slides happened. One taking out 15 or so homes down the mountain into a river. Now with the amount build up and land erosion from all the mountain side building in the last 20 years it could be far worse.

That's awful. Got a friend in Asheville that was worried about trees. I wonder if it caused any landslides in the park and took out the road between Gatlinburg and Cherokee again.

Parents just moved north of downtown Asheville this week... Luckily was able to get into contact with them earlier. I'm in RTP, trying to see when they would be able to come over to me. What a disaster

My sister says in Hendersonville the issue they are having are the crews cannot do anything until the water is gone and now there are issues of sinkholes as well on the roads.
This is probably the worst nightmare of EMAs, power companies, water companies, and other infrastructure agencies anywhere. This isn't what we are used to seeing with inland hurricane damage in cities like Baton Rouge or Houston and the towns surrounding them. Across a large area you basically have nothing you can rely on as far as infrastructure. Crews can't even get to areas, roads are gone, bridges washed out. What roads look okay could very well be compromised and not suited for heavy equipment to use. If it were just clearing roads to start assessing damage, as we see with most inland storms, they'd be okay. This is essentially storm surge damage in the mountains. This is going to take months, and the relief effort will be on a scale we haven't seen since Katrina.

They clocked max wind speed on Mt. Mitchell at 100 mph. About 8,000 feet elevation. They also got 24” of rain there. For anyone who has been up there those numbers are insane.

It’s gonna be like the book one second after for some folks up there.

Update…. Finally got word from family, and everyone is alive and well, so that’s great news, but the news coming out of there like from Black Mountain, Chimney Rock, and especially Montreat and Swannanoa which are being reported as just gone.
I don’t think people in America are going to believe it when everything comes out about lives lost in this stuff in NC. This is seriously bad stuff. Please keep all of these people in your prayers. They’re going to need lots of them and lots of help to rebuild from this devastation. The infrastructure itself is in shambles.

I haven't looked at winds up that way. The rain is the problem. 29.58" was the highest total, which was a remarkable forecast by the WPC and pretty much reached the high end of their forecast, which was 20-30".
