A new report by Wells Fargo spotlights how GLP-1 weight-loss drugs are reshaping the healthcare industry by addressing obesity.

Wells Fargo released a report Thursday which notes that much of the American healthcare system has been structured around obesity, given it has become a foundational condition in the country with 40.3% of adults considered obese and 9.4% severely obese.

Usage of GLP-1 drugs surged in recent years, rising over 140% from 2022 to 2024, which had a significant impact on hospital services aimed at treating obesity. In that same timeframe, bariatric surgery volumes fell 34.1%.

"GLP-1s may be marketed as weight-loss drugs, but they're rapidly becoming one of the most disruptive economic forces in healthcare," John Teasley, market executive for Wells Fargo Healthcare Banking, told FOX Business. "We're seeing a medication class with the potential to reshape how providers generate revenue, where investors allocate capital, and how consumers engage with their health."

The report said that the healthcare system and hospitals in particular are having to adapt to a changing landscape caused by the rise of GLP-1 semaglutide drugs, as obesity patients who previously would've undergone surgery after attempting to diet now have a pharmaceutical alternative that is "visible, reversible,

GLP-1s may also have an impact on cardiology, with a trial showing that their use reduced major cardiovascular events by 20% in overweight or obese adults without diabetes. If that trend prevails at scale, hospitals would see fewer procedures, repeat admissions, complications and other downstream interventions – leading to a sizable reduction in demand for those services.

Bad health, including what being overweight brings with it, is the business model. If folks are healthy, managed care thieves wouldn’t be earning millions/billions. We don’t have “healthcare,” really. It’s all a sham now.

Let’s check back in 10 years. Hopefully diabetes and breathing treatment costs decrease also.

Where does it say “healthcare industry is bitching” in the article?

The article is just stating facts that less people are needing bariatric surgery.

No. We still have to subsidize all of the poor people's healthcare. As the middle class disappears there will be more poor folks.

It has the potential to really disrupt how the healthcare system has been built, as far as adults are concerned.

If we can reduce obesity, it would reduce pretty much every other debilitating disease/syndrome that we see in older patients.

Would be an absolutely beautiful thing.

My bad: "a healthcare industry built largely around a subscription of fat people surgeries and a lifetime of drugs, other complications and follow up visits is DELIGHTED to hear those services will no longer be needed "

Not really.

It’s not like doctors were intentionally fattening patients or encouraging them to stay fat or keeping them fat for profit. Americans certainly don’t need any coaxing

Americans just do not have the ability or willingness or whatever, largely, to lose and keep off weight.

So, there was a need for bariatric surgery that was filled by willing doctors.

There is an effective drug now, and this medication is preferable to surgery. There is now less of a need for bariatric surgery. Fewer will go into the field.

Surgery always seemed like a suboptimal treatment for a psychiatric-type issue.

Diabetes
High blood pressure
Heart disease
Cancer
Stroke
Kidney disease
Etc.

The majority of the leading causes of death in the US could be severely curtailed.

Being overweight or having obesity are associated with a higher risk of getting 13 types of cancer. These cancers make up 40% of all cancers diagnosed in the United States each year.

Decrease the number of fat people, decrease so many medical issues.

For fat people on here, if you stop being fat, your life gets better.
