Medical billing is hilarious.

I'm hospital employed.

When I do an ingrown nail procedure on someone between the office visit and nail removal the hospital bills like $2,700. Insurance pays like $400. I get paid like $150.

There is literally no way to sort through all the BS.

CT Scan- $1000
30 minute endoscopy- $1100
2 hour HIDA scan- $1100

Impending gallbladder surgery is going to be $5k. I’ll have to wait until I can get my HSA in 2026 to have that surgery. Thanks to the BBB, my ACA plan with a $15K deductible is finally eligible for an HSA. Oh, but the premiums are increasing from $1291 to $1535 in 2026- me, wife and 2 kids

It’s ridiculous.

I got a chest CT for cash, with contrast for about $200. Kidney imaging, $150 ish.

My high deductible plan in TX ($5500 deductible, for me and two kids) is a little over $4k a year in insurance cost to me. LA is farked up beyond belief.

Is that the charge amount? That’s basically meaningless

Only post that matters in this thread so far.

Charges vs what's actually owed are two different things. The charges are just made up numbers 2-3x or more of what's actually reimbursed. And thats even if those charges are reimbursed.

Though I do enjoy the insurance EOB which proudly lists the bullshite "discount" they got you as if they saved you money vs what the cash option would have been.

Yes, it’s normal. The money has to come from somewhere. If you look at the CEO that Luigi shot, his salary was the same as CBK. CBK never had to worry about getting gunned down in the street though.

Physicians get paid literally 1% of what the hospitals bill. The facility fees are what are outrageous.

Go look at the number of healthcare administrators. They literally add no income or produce anything of value yet have six figure salaries - especially the ones in the C-suite bossing around the doctors.

Especially for imaging, everyone needs to STOP going to the incumbent imaging provider and shop the independents (Green Imaging is who I've used for a decade, at 10% of the hospital network cost.) Get the doctors order, call someone like Green, and let them schedule you something for 90% less than the insurance charged rate same day.

All they do is fill holes in schedules for MRIs, etc. The MRI machine cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, there's no point in it being unused from 2-3 on a Friday afternoon. They'd rather you pay peanuts and get another procedure in.

My wife (no pics) is a manager at her hospital department that does procedures. One of her duties is to order items needed for procedures. She spends $100K per week and her department is profitable. The cost of medical supplies are outrageous!

The charge is $11k but usual and customary will reduce the actual payment to approximately $2500. Of which you paid 1k.

We must quit this practice and establish truth-in-billing.
Ask what the self-pay charge is and the real final reimbursement amount will be very close.

Our healthcare system is a complete racket. Hospitals charge insurance companies far more than they do if someone is paying out of pocket. The whole system is a straight up scam

Wife(no pics) fell and apparently bruised ribs. Went to emergency room, had a CT scan. Emergency center which is a separate building from the hospital, which is a few miles down the road charged insurance over $65,000.00 . They paid $550 and we were billed $1900

I wouldn't assume the ER is in network even if the hospital is. That's what's really BS about it.

The healthcare costs that you find so offensive are not the actual costs that are paid for the medical procedures. If you will examine your EOB's (explanation of benefits) a bit more closely you will see a "billed" amount which, I agree is insanely high, but if you are "in-network" the charges that you and your health insurance carrier pay are greatly reduced and are more reasonable. "In-network" means that you are receiving care from medical providers that have an agreement for preferred(lower) pricing with your health insurance company.
Whenever folks want to vent about the cost of medical care they tend to post the "Billed Charges" and not what was actually paid for their medical procedures. .
The most important take away from this thread is that you must review your EOB's and if you ever see any dollar amount applied to an "Out of Network" deductible then you have a serious problem and need to reconsider you health insurance policy. "Out of network" charges are extremely expensive. These charges apply only to a separate deductible and the PPO discounts don't apply, This wasn't much of an issue before "ObamaCare" but unfortunately it is now.
