Hawaii may once again be at the nation’s forefront when it comes to setting smoking policy.

The first state to raise the minimum age for purchasing tobacco products to 21 is now considering a measure that would effectively forbid cigarettes in five years.

State Rep. Richard Creagan, a medical doctor, has sponsored legislation that aims to phase in a ban, raising the age requirement to 30 in 2020, 40 in 2021, 50 in 2022 and 100 in 2024.

Why not just say "we want to ban smoking"?

If you're 100 then it should be legal to smoke crack, meth, heroin, whatever...

If you don't pay for your own health insurance / healthcare then you shouldn't be allowed to smoke.

But the thing about that is.. People who smoke has more health issues, more health issues means more health cost, which their health insurance is paying for and long term all that does is make insurance prices go up for everyone.

They should have the minimum smoking age follow 21 year olds through the year 2119 and beyond. More of a grandfather clause.

Just bought some tobacco pipes from an estate sale. His granddaughter said her grandad died at 98 and smoked every day of his adult life.

Maybe the tobacco lobby hasn't been funneling enough campaign cash to the islands lately. I bet they get the whole thing figured out.
