My friend, today I am your kindred spirit. By an unfortunate coincidence, yesterday I too had to put my good pal of 16 years to sleep. He was a lab mix. My son and I dug his grave and while doing so shared stories about our loyal friend. The unconditional love and friendship we receive from a good dog is one of God’s greatest gifts to humans.

Sorry for your loss.

The only downside to a dog, is that they don't live long enough.

I just lost my 13 year old lab on Sunday.

It’s absolutely devastating.

Condolences to you and your family. Little guy was a member of your family for 16 years, which is great.

And… TD is a terrific site. I don’t post much but I love the site and have for more than 20 years. But with all the other forums and topics on the site for posters to argue and keyboard fight with each other, I’ll never understand why people downvote posts like yours.

16 is a good run, man.

Putting down a dog is the worst. Just such a hard thing to do. I'll be facing that in the next few years, yet again, and am not looking forward to it.

Sorry, baw.

Consider cremation we had our 14 year old chihuahua and 17 year old dachshund cremated in less than a year . We got them back in a beautiful small box with there name and dates on them . Also got a nice letter/ poem and a small round plaster with their paw print on them . When we pass they coming with us ..

losing a pet sucks.

Having to bury it yourself sucks more.

Condolences.

Losing a pet is a terrible experience. They are so loyal and loving. Prayers to your family.

We waited last time about 6 months then got two more, and they are so much fun to have around. Dogs are awesome.

They love you unconditionally for your entire life, it's only right to give them as pain free a send off as you can. I've been a part of the process too many times, and it never gets easier, but it's part of owning an animal. For any younger ones out there, making this decision and sticking to it despite slight protests from wife/kids is part of being a man.

One of our current dogs is hyper athletic, and it has been my experience that the hyper athletic ones tend to hit the wall and fail extremely quickly. She's having issues going on walks late spring/summer during the day now, just can't handle the heat. Hopefully I have another three years, but we shall see. My wife's dog cannot handle being alone without a sibling, so the real gut punch will be I don't have an extended time to grieve.

17 year(?) old Chihuahua/Rat Terrier. Lost most if not all his teeth. But I think he has dementia or something like that.. He has completely stopped eating his dog food and wants people food.. I have about $30 worth of dog food that I am just going to give away.. I make a half of a sandwich and he is happy...
For the past two years he has been using my house as his personal toilet.. He has been housebroken for years. The other day he was just standing there looking at me then he just assumed the position of taking a dump.. I was like WTF are you doing.. About 5 minutes ago I almost stepped in one of his little piles... At times I think he is just going to croak right there in front of me.... I know the summer will be hard on him but we will see...

16 year old chihuahua had a stroke and having to euthanize...

We have a tentative appointment this Friday to have our 16 year old chihuahua, Chloe, euthanized.

Multiple little strokes, confusion, walking into walls, lack of appetite, legs giving out, all of that stuff within the last year.
Currently experiencing a collapsing trachea with the associated cough.
I honestly didn't think she was going to make it through the night.

She survived a pit bull attack and a blood transfusion but her time is near.

ETA: just found out the appointment is changed to tomorrow after work. Shite's getting real.

Our dog just turned 15. She can't see or hear a thing, but otherwise is in decent health for a dog that age. But it kills me to know that our time with her is winding down quickly. She is the best dog I have ever owned and my 4 kids don't really have a memory where she is not part of it. I guess at the end of the day if great dogs live this long, we should view it as a blessing that we had them for so long. My favorite dog of all time and my longest living one. All things considered, that is pretty cool.

One of the hardest things to do in life… I’ve had to do it once and it still bothers me to this day. Just be there for him and make sure you are the last thing he sees…

I'm sorry man. My almost 13 year old lab mix is almost at the end of his rope. No way I'm ready to let him go but when it's time it's time. I miss him already and he's not even gone yet.

I just grabbed my corgi by the face and said “you’re gonna die one day and I’m gonna miss you”. Then he farted.

Do people not shoot their dogs anymore? My golden retriever was in pain and had no quality of life. Couldn’t walk anymore and wouldn’t eat so I took her out back and took care of it. That’s how it was growing up and what you did and I wonder what changed.
