Next thread: using "tough" as a descriptor of something good.
Everything old is new again.

'tough' was common in that meaning when I was in high school in the late '60s

It’s actually the opposite.

If you say a girl is “low-key hot”, it means that most people are not observing her as being hot (perhaps because of how she dresses), but she, in fact, is hot.

ETA: I’ve never heard anyone use that phrase any other way than this.
The entire point of the thread is they use it so much, that it basically doesn't mean that anymore.

I always thought it meant “in a non obvious (high key) way”.

Perhaps referring to the "secretary" effect in a lot of movies where the glasses are somewhat obscuring the underlying beauty

Or like Rachel Leigh Cook in She’s All That. Complete nerd till she took those off

Good. Anything to stop people from misusing “literally”.

It really is like they aggressively use the "now" slang in a contrived fashion.

I distinctly remember a conversation amongst adults when I was a youngen regarding me and my friends use of “psych” and “not”. As we rolled our eyes at them.

“It means they’re teasing. Or the opposite of what they mean.”
“Ohhh, well that just seems silly.”

That’s what we must sound like to the youts today.
