Have you ever skimped on a work trip and just used the time as vacation?

For example, you’re scheduled to go to a 4 day leadership/management course. It’s local, not associated with your company, not even affiliated with the industry you’re in. Just a generic course.
You’re dreading it, because you’ve been through one of these types before. The course is already paid for and expensed.
Have you ever done anything like just not showing up and using the time as a 4 day vacation? Not sure how anyone would really know or find out. It’s not training for my job, and I’m not really expected to produce any deliverable out of it.

Sounds like a good way to get fired.
We had a guy that I'm almost 100% sure didn't attend a week worth of online training. If he did he signed into the online meeting and went back to bed.
When he got back in the office he still didn't know how to do the most basic things in the software he was supposed to be learning. Class cost like 5k too

I did ask hr to locate a short course in boulder Colorado so I could fly up and meet the wife for a vacation. told them the cheaper the course the better as long as it was the third week of July.

I saw several groups of guys leaving a conference last week after the first morning session saying they were headed to the links.

Had a deposition in Destin Florida one time and the only hotel I could find was on the beach

We have an industry symposium that happens every year where 75% of the people sign up to see who else is going and then make plans to golf/shoot/hit the bars. Company gets far more out of me not showing up to the seminars lol

I had a jerk of a professor for a evening class and subsequent lab back when Alabama played Clemson for one of the titles. It started at 5pm and wouldn't end until 8pm usually. He apologized for not cancelling the class, but said we had to power through it since this class only met about 5 or 6 times in the semester and went on about academics vs sports, etc. I was the only one with balls enough to ditch the lab after class was over. He knew someone ditched the following week based on handouts he had remaining and grilled the class, but no one confessed. The girl who signed my name for me on the lab sign in sheet did a flawless job disguising her handwriting.

I bailed on the last 2 days of a conference in Nashville a few years ago. Staying at a Ramada didn’t exactly feel like vacation...but it was nice not being at work.

Not a full conference but I skip sessions and days often. I often use it as time to entertain clients with offshore fishing or whatever the region has.

We fired a guy who we sent to Hawaii to meet clients. Instead he got drunk for 3 days at the pool.

I'll definitely skip sessions and cut out early
But I wouldn't entirely skip a seminar, especially if I scheduled it on the company dime

I’ve never skimped, but I most certainly took advantage of transportation.
Never would stay an extra day, but I fulfilled all of my obligations and had no problems playing tourist on my spare time.
Have to go to Chicago regularly and the meeting let out early so I spend the day at the Fields museum.

Yea. Just not showing up to a week long training sounds like a terrible idea unless you’re trying to get fired.
However, what you just mentioned, is the secret to traveling for work. If I have to go somewhere decent for work, you better believe that meeting will be scheduled on Tuesday or Thursday and I’ll be taking off the Monday or Friday to make a long weekend out of the trip.
Only way to do it.

I did it while in school. It was a conference for my field. Well, I showed up at the first session and just left afterwards, so I still went to the location.
