With how often people fell into it on TV when I was a kid, I figured I would have found some by now just on the law of averages, but no dice.

With as much as it was a problem on TV and movies you’d think it was lurking around every corner

You just need a nearby snake to grab.

Yes Sub-surface while driving piling.

When we were kids we looked everywhere we could to find quicksand like we would see in the Tarzan movies. Never found any.

Could you tell us a bit more about your experience with Quicksand? Most of us have never seen it IRL.

Twice. Along the river at Montgomery, La as a kid. Simply saturated sand.

But as an adult, I was plant taxonoming up in Claiborne Parish north of Homer. There was a sort of plateau on this sandy hill top that had a very small pond in the middle. I walk over and see this uncommon water plant just a step away from the edge. I step out and immediately sink up to my knee caps. Had to be pulled out. I could have made it out without help, but if I had not been just a little cautious and taken a short step it could have been bad. never seen anything like that since.

But again, just saturated sand.

Closest thing: Duck hunting at the Wax there’s one island where the mud is so soft and deep it’s almost like quicksand, we actually got snowshoes to hunt it for a while before just moving to another spot where the bottom was harder and still had ducks.

I have encountered more of "quick mud," and it was never unavoidable. I have definitely lost a shoe to the stuff, lol. I also thought it would be more common in the world, maybe climate change dried them all up... ;-)

To oversimplify, it’s very fine sand mixed with a particular amount of water. The only way you’ll run into a problem is if you panic, fight with it, and drive yourself down because of friction. If you just stop moving, you’ll float because you’re less dense than it is.

There was an abandoned sand pit near where I lived growing up. We would put up targets across to the other side and sight in our rifles there. One time I walked across to put up targets and suddenly sunk down to between my knees and hips. I was able to get out but the sand sucked off both my shoes*. That shite is for real.

not quicksand but i hit some quick mud one time and my dad had to drag me out. I was 7 or 8. Went in up to my neck. My boots stayed in it.
