Yes I have.

Which is why I love when people rag on others for not having certain pay or not being able to get certain "fundamental" housing, car, health insurance, etc.

I know that shite can end in a heart beat and that it isn't easy to just find another great job.

they'll lay off high earning employees just to save a few bucks. if "layoffs" is ever mentioned by management - jump ship ASAP. never listen to another thing they have to say. always better to leave on your terms than theirs.

Very easy to get laidoff by poor company management operations.

On my entire resume dating back to the 1st ever job at age 16, a total of 1 employer is still even in existence. Correction: just googled that remaining entity; ceased operations Jan 2017.

Yes.... was part of a 40% layoff when housing market went bust in 08.... also laid off back in mid 80s when oilfield slowed down.... each time I was out of work about 3-4 weeks before finding something else

Could you go into specifics of why your skills are outdated? I work in the same field.

Nope, my division was once purchased by another company, but they kept everyone that they wanted.

I would have a backup plan, if I were you.

Once, yes. It sucked too. If you have 5 years before this happens, and you want to stay with them, then just work hard and avoid the bottom 10%.

I got laid off in 2002 and they gave me a one year salary as a severance package. My boss at the time was TOTALLY against it and fought to keep my branch open. I took hunting season off that year and went to work in Feb of 2003 and had no problem finding another job and have been here ever since.

I think a lot of finding another place of employment is your degree, reputation, and work history.

Somewhat... I was basically told that I could be laid off or move into a manufacturing position. Lesser pay, miserable work. I was only given the option due to one of my family members being high up on the chain.

Ended up taking the other position and started applying anywhere and everywhere. Still nothing yet. A week later I was moved back to my original position as someone else in the department quit.

Pretty shitty feeling still.

I worked at a small driving range in high school. The owner showed up one afternoon, said he sold the place to someone else. Gave me pay owed and good luck in life.

Had this cloud hanging over my head in the first half of the year (merger) and started looking around immediately. A couple of opportunities cane through, I gambled and turned one down before the layoffs and another one shortly after. Made the cut but shite could have backfired, those were some miserable months leading up to it...Can't imagine how it is for those who got the axe even though the severance offered was above average

Yep.

Sucked at the time. Had just bought a house, had first kid, and bought a car within the last 6 months.

3 months of rumors ended with 8 weeks of pay for the 8 years served.

Turns out to be the best thing that ever happened because that company criminally underpays the employees because it is in a poor area of the state.

I make more than double here in BR for a stable, private 75+ year old company.

frick that old company and the people who put my name on the list. Found out a year later from an ex manager that it was because I was the top paid guy in the department and they figured they could hire someone cheaper to do my job right out of school.

Yep, it sucks. Dealt with it twice in a period of a decade or so. Nothing quite like the feeling of not knowing how you are going to support your family. Saw it coming, but not soon enough to have another job lined up.

If I learned anything, if you are worried at the prospect of being laid off it's a pretty strong sign that you are considered disposable.

To that end, I'm eternally grateful to those companies for letting me go. If I was being honest with myself I hated the role and had no opportunity for growth. I should have left on my own well beforehand. Being let go was the best possible outcome for me and them for that matter.

Heard a story about one guy being told he would survive a round of layoffs only to be let go 2 weeks later in a second round.

Had he been let go in the first round, he would have received 3 months severance. The second round did not receive anything

Damn, that sucks. Did they say what the logic was behind that?
