Talked to 2 friends who work at DOTD..... they say they aren’t tearing down the Merchant. I think they are just removing part of the porch area.
That’s what I heard anyway

Maybe you have a case for that in cities where you have the grid layout. Would be a nightmare in Baton Rouge.
I should explain my comment....
without a turn lane, left turns frick shite up.
For instance, on Acadian, a left turn lane exists at the Catholic life center on 100 Oaks. It works very well.

Ah okay. Still though, that's a great on ramp right there. Closing it is just gonna force people down College and Acadian which are both already choke points, particularly College.

Lol at this. You guys realize that 3 right turns make a left right? You simply pass where you are going and make a right at the next road, then a right to go back, then a right where you would normally take a left.
Traffic flowing at a faster pace is always better than slow traffic with turns everywhere. It’s why a lot of big cities have a lot of one way streets.

You realize 1 turn is less than 3 right?

I've already said it would work really well with a grid layout. Unfortunately, Baton Rouge city planning (or lack thereof) makes that infeasible here.

Sounds great...
Problem is that the "next" right turn past Claycut is Capital Heights which is...A ONE WAY coming from the East (i.e., NO right turn). So, that traffic will now have to go all the way to Government Street where they have a joke of a right turn "lane" so it will back up tremendously. Oh, and just think about how awesome it will be after the "road diet" is completed and there's only ONE frickING LANE on Government.
As for Broussard (SJA), the "next" right is Claycut, which means a bunch of teenagers will be coming south on Westmoreland or Steele or one of those other residential streets, which I am sure the locals will love.
I understand WHY they are planning to do this. Both of those left turn lanes spill into the travel lanes in the mornings before school and in the afternoons after school. However, it would make MORE sense to work on extending the lanes and cycling the lights to move more vehicles through there than eliminating them altogether.

I asked at merchant a few weeks ago and they said the owners agreed to a deal where they don't have to tear down.

Used to live on Hundred Oaks back in my college days. Would be tough to get home if this was the case back then.

Unless you need to go the other direction. If you are at Winn Dixie, you can't turn left on Burbank either so there's effectively no way to get to Highland unless you drive three miles around via Boyd.
You can turn right out of Winn Dixie and U turn on Burbank in 1/4 mile. Then turn left at the light to get to Highland.
That intersection works exponentially better now with those access management improvements.

BR doesnt have dedicated U-turn lanes like this at intersections?

Posted on 10/15/18 at 9:16 am to 50_Tiger
Dedicated U-turn lanes? You're lucky if you get a turn lane. It's Baton Rouge tradition to slam on your brakes at full speed to make a left turn and make everyone behind you wait

Yeesh.
We have so many freeways that this is almost a requirement here in DFW.

DOTD website.
Other than the Wallnut Hills, the Catholic Center, and the Villa del Rose apartments, there will be no left turns.
They also are going to raise the median 3’ so people don’t cross.
You are trolling. There is nothing, NOTHING, on the DOTD website that shows a project on South Acadian. If you know for a fact, what is the project number, when has it let or will be let.
We'll be waiting.

Or, just no longer go to Winn Dixie.

You forgot to add "for some".
ETA: I'm not debating that the status quo is better. The u-turn thing and other traffic shaping ideas do work better in other cities. However, their solution doesn't pick winner & losers by making it near impossible to get from one location to another for some.

I have a rental property on Acadian and the tenant received a letter that he gave to me from DOTD. They will indeed be raising the medians, scraping the road surface and putting a no skid type over layment, as well as working on the intersection at Claycut and Acadian. That is all that was mentioned in the letter. I'll go back to check but I saw nothing about left turns.
ETA:
excerpt from the letter. State Project No. H.011261, Federal Aid Project H011261
"The project being proposed by Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, using federal funds, is located on South Acadian Thruway between Perkins Road and Government Street in EBR Parish, La. The proposed scope of this project will mill 3" off the existing pavement and then overlaid with a 3 1/2" asphaltic concrete mix. The median openings on South Acadian Thruway at Belmont, Gladden, and the Acadian Grocery store will be closed. Residents in the Belmont, Gladden area will have to use Hundred Oaks to access northbound South Acadian Thruway. The intersections on South Acadian Thruway at Hundred Oaks, Broussard and Claycut will have their geometries improved and updated to current design standards. The centerline of South Acadian Thruway in the curve just north of Claycut will be realigned to the west in an effort to stop lane departure crashes at this location. All work will be within the existing right of way."

Well that’s not true. There’s 2 little cut-thru areas on Burbank where you can U-turn.

Hopefully they make government two lanes after that.
