Have they gone too far? Your Kids’ School Bus About to Become Roaming Surveillance Vehicle

A company that sells cameras to catch drivers illegally passing stopped school buses wants to turn them into license plate readers.

companies that maintain automatic license plate readers—and profit from selling the data they collect—are also looking to track electronic signatures from connected devices and even your car’s infotainment hardware with a new product straightforwardly named SignalTrace. And they’re not stopping there.
404media published a report on Tuesday detailing plans to equip schoolhouses with automatic license plate readers and turn the data over to law enforcement. The report is based on leaked documents from BusPatrol, a company that specializes in stop-arm cameras that capture images of drivers illegally passing school buses (“stop-arm” is the proper name of the fold-out stop signs on school buses). The company claims to have over 40,000 of these cameras deployed across 24 states, and at least 30 states permit them. They use AI software to automatically review images and submit them to law enforcement.

As noted by Reason, stop-arm cameras have been criticized for not delivering promised safety benefits, but they’ve nonetheless generated tens of millions of dollars in revenue for the companies that deploy them. And according to the report, BusPatrol now wants to turn those cameras into license plate readers. Instead of activating when a specific law is allegedly being violated, they’ll now reportedly be live at all times, capturing data on any vehicle within sight of a school bus that can then be sold to the law-enforcement agencies BusPatrol already counts as customers.

It goes well beyond that. Try reading the OP again.

Yes. This is the surveillance state through the disguise of private business and "safety".
But being anti AI and anti AI data center is just Chinese propaganda, guys.

Read, please. They're switching them to full time license plate scanners.

I think I've seen one person pass a stopped school bus in all my years of driving.

The CHILDREN! That's why they put school zone cameras on 5 lane, heavily trafficked avenues that Zero kids actually cross!
My $.02, pass a law requiring all funds collected from these to be dedicated to pedestrian bridges. That would permanently solve the problem no?? And help drivers who no longer have to slow down for pedestrians

In Ebr parish we have highly aggressive bus drivers. They will tailgate you at high speeds and try to run you off the road ( if you are driving the posted limit). They run red lights, blow through stop signs ,and speed.
All while they have the precious children on board.

Now do seatbelts in buses.

Yep

We are all already under mass surveillance. This won't change all that much.

I don't understand why people with cameras on their homes and business complain about municipalities using cameras when they are the ones tasked with our safety and security. One of the easiest ways to engineer security and safety is for criminals to know there are cameras everywhere, so they have more of a deterrent to commit crimes.

Well they don’t seem to be doing enough for the kids ON the bus as of now.
My school system apparently covered up an accused rape of a 7th grader that happened on one of their busses, with the school system and the bus operator doing the Spider-Man meme at each other for the blame.

So many grown men scared of the incompetent government (they love to trash talk) taking pictures of their car out in public.

I agree wholeheartedly………….. except for the assholes who pull back out to get right behind the ambulance to use it as “interference” in order to follow it and get through traffic faster. These types need to be shot on sight.
