Dont remember the commentary but this is what wikipedia said:

She is the first African-American woman to win a gold medal in swimming for the United States or any individual Olympic medal in swimming for the United States

Most black people just say black...

I cannot really think of a time when another black person called me African American. Using that term is more a PC white thing. I'm fine with just being American.

I was curious about this as well and it's slow at work today, so I did some quick research. Here are some facts, as far as I can tell...

Enith Brigitha (Holland) was the first black person to win an individual medal (bronze) for swimming in the Olympics in 1976.

Anthony Nesty (Suriname) was the first black person to win an individual gold medal for swimming in the Olympics in 1988.

Simone Manuel was the first black woman and black american to win an individual gold medal for swimming in the Olympics.

Cullen Jones was the first black American to win a gold medal (team) for swimming in the Olympics in 2012.

Cullen Jones was the first black American to win an individual medal (Silver) for swimming in the Olympics in 2012.

Anthony Ervin was the first American of African descent to win an individual gold medal for swimming in the Olympics in 2000. Whether he's considered black or not, I don't know, but by and large he's considered African American and is often honored during black history month celebrations focused around swimming.

I actually had a professor discussing disease rates in Africa, breaking them down by race and he referred to African blacks as African-Americans the whole lecture.

This PC stuff now trumps common sense.

Eh, there are plenty of people who identify with their heritage. Plenty of people refer to themselves as Polish-American, Italian-American, Irish-American, etc. Even though their families have been in the U.S. for generations. It's not an exclusive thing.

The main issue I see with the term "African-American" is the same issue I see (to a lesser degree) with the term "colored." Neither term is accurately applied. "African-American" meaning black is silly. Egypt is in Africa, but they're middle-eastern.

If we're gonna divide people along racial lines, then a catch-all term like "African-American" isn't descriptive enough.

Simone is a great AMERICAN

Absolutely, that doesn't diminish the accomplishment of being the first female black or African-American or whatever swimmer to win individual gold at the Olympics.

Im not. It is factually wrong
You've said that 4 or 5 times.

It's pretty obvious what they mean here. Ok, it's not factually correct, but you know exactly what they're talking about, not sure why you have so much vigor to correct it every single time when you know what is being talked about and what they mean.

So all black people in the US are here because of slavery?

Putting aside the realization that some people, even in Europe, call Black Europeans African American. The look on her face when she realized she won was one of genuine disbelief and joy. I thought that shot was pretty awesome.

Really shel? We shouldn't respond with vigor to our media reporting complete ignorance?

Absolutely it was.

On this topic, I really just thought it was odd in how she was described. I really don't have a problem with it other than it's a PC term.

This is EXACTLY why I refer to myself as a Black or in rare occasions a Black American.

If you are not directly from Africa, you are not African American. Descent is not he commonality that determines the name. If you believe this is not true, feel free to comment.

To be honest, most Blacks do not even know where their ancestors came from.

It's not complete ignorance, in the least.

African American is a term for Black people.

Again, you're bringing this up in multiple threads for some weird reason, it's very odd.

How about people who use the term Italian American? Or a lot of times he just called the stove Italian. For people who call themselves Irish American? They have an Italian day parade should we cancel that too?

On another note, will there ever be a European-American that wins the 100 meter dash?
