Me and my wife were poor when we started out, I mean toast or hot pockets for supper poor. We slummed it out for a few years while she was finishing up her degree, I was the only income at that time. There was a company I had been wanting to work for but they never had an opening. When they finally did I took my shot and got hired. Moved to middle class. Worked my arse off for a few years and got promoted to management and now just a little higher in middle but still middle.

I was born poor. My parents worked their arse off to get the middle class and I worked my arse off to get to the lowest crust of upper class (according to the calculator in the other thread).

Grew up eating cream of wheat for dinner and thinking that was normal if that tells you anything.
Worked my arse off and paid for my BA and MA myself. The loans I did accrue were paid off by Uncle Sam under his generous mandatory middle eastern vacation plan.
Left the Army and now between the wife and I in our early forties we've already broken a million in net worth. Wife came from a solid blue collar family on the west coast.

Poor when I was a kid, middle to upper middle during high school when my parents advanced in their careers, the according to some website linked here earlier, I’m in the higher class for the state of Louisiana. In reality, I’m more upper middle.

Who isnt poor when they are 19 years old?
Honestly. The idea that a kid with little to no income isnt poor confuses me.
And if the kid is still in mom and dads wallet through school... who isnt poor at 22 years old?
My parents weren't poor. But I certainly was when I was 19.
I worked 2-3 jobs, had scholarships and student loans, and graduated. I took a job with no salary and benefits but the opportunity with no caps on commission and made my way to a comfortable life.

To be fair wife and I are DINKs.
Much easier to sock away the cash when you don't have kids and all the expenses that come with them.

For real. My parents didn’t want to support me as an adult so they helped with college related stuff but rent and bills were my responsibility. Had to work full time all through college to barely afford to live. I used to be terrible with money, but after that experience, I have very good savings and spending habits.

True, but it takes discipline regardless.

Our system of incentives are so broken.
All the people in this thread, who happen to be the exact people who we desperately should want to have children, know the easiest way to stay in your current “class” is to start a family.
Demographics will be the death our nation and it starts with the broken incentives that our terrible leaders have put in place decades ago.
My accountant tells me that if we do private school that I can assume a 7 figure cost (future value) including college per child.

Similar story for me. Born poor, parents moved up to middle class as I grew up. I was pretty poor coming out of school, but I assume a large percentage of new grads are. In the past 10 years I’ve moved into the “upper” class according to that calculator.

Came from a pretty standard middle class family, parents made around 130k on two incomes. They saved but not as much as they should have. I make about the same as them but with double the savings and investments.

Well we honestly didn't set out to not have kids. Wife and I met after I was already in the Army, and between her career and me gallivanting all across the globe in wonderful desert shitholes, by the time I got out and we were married, the having kids ship had sailed.

You’ll always be a reflection of the your parents and your early schooling. And that’s okay.
You can certainly get rich or even just comfortable. But your identity is set early on. Embrace it.

I get it, I was just waving my fist at the clouds in frustration because I hear this from so many people who a generation or two ago would be raising the next round of productive Americans.

We were poor when I was young. Not only did I move up, but glad to say my parents did as well. My old man grew up not knowing when his next meal was coming and now owns two houses, two vehicles, a hunting camp, two boats, ATVs, etc and doesn’t owe money on any of it. He just retired in his late 50s and he’s set up nice and enjoying it.
I’ve tried my best to emulate his hard work and sitting pretty well. Got a ways to go but solidly upper middle class.

From lower to middle, but my dad did it. We were poor as shite growing up and lived in piece of junk in Waggaman.
But luckily dad is white so he just rode the privilege train to that middle 50%.

Grew up poor, living in govt owned housing outside NYC. Dad busted his arse in night school earning a Mech eng degree. We were middle by the time I was 15.
I’ve earned enough to be considered upper
The neighborhood I grew up in was majority minority. I had more black friends than white. I’m proud to say all of my childhood friends worked their way up to at least middle class, most are upper.
My theory on why we ascended: 2 parent households, great schools, and neighbors who assisted each other in raising the kids.
