by that logic, I have a smallish boat, but I MIGHT get bigger and you never really know if someone might call me up to come pull a trailer with a herd of cattle....so I should go buy a Mack truck?

Marketing.
Very few ppl need that much towing capacity.
Farmers and RV owners. That's about it.

Everything in the 3/4 ton market seems to now center around being able to tow a gajillion pounds and have close to 1000ft-lbs of torque. Even the 1/2 tons are sorta in on this action. Anecdotally where I live I rarely see anyone towing anything that seems to approach those large trailer numbers. Is it a real need or more of a marketing competition?
I think it's the truck equivalent of family sedans marketing horsepower and 0-60 time.

I always figured that the auto makers look at Braxxtinn Sr. as an additional purchaser, but the large # of folks who really do need as much power as possible are who the 3/4 ton + pickups look for as their bread & butter, year in and year out.
"This truck is too powerful." said no one while pulling a heavy load. If they can make more power, and if that power is highly desirable to people who depend on it, then why not?
The soccer dads are just a plus, because soccer dads are gonna do soccer dad things. (It'S gOt MoRe ToRqUe though, HoNeY...)

It's 100% marketing. Almost no one has any use for being able to tow a gajillion pounds.
I wanted to be different so I have a former 2005 International Ambulance to haul my 36' trailer.

Are oil prices up? If so, then the answer is yes. Baws gotta tow that 28ft fishing rig

They have to make them that way to justify the prices they sell them for.

The economy is booming and people will always live within $2.13 a month for debt to income. The standard of living in America is incredible right now for anyone with halfway decent employment, and very few people even realize it. There are $400k houses being built on 1/4 acre lots by the thousands everywhere you look, everyone has a 70k truck, and there are golf carts, side by sides and 20+ foot boats in every damn garage and people act like they're poor.

I will say that I once pulled a Supra Launch 22v behind my Chevy Colorado. Not gonna lie it was a pretty brutal 5.5 hour drive. Having a larger more powerful truck would have been nice. Don't get me wrong, my little truck made the journey just fine, however had really low MPG and breaking was hard and bumps were rough. That being said I would recommend anyone looking at a Silverado to consider a Colorado because it is significantly cheaper and way more efficient. Also its a hell of a lot easier to drive and park.

We had a motorhome from '94-'96. It was a 26 foot Class C with a Ford 460 that got 7.5mpg. Filling up a 50 gallon gas tank wasn't so bad in 1995, but today? Ouch.
Yea but much like boats, if you can afford to buy it you can afford the gas

What's with this trend where someone will drive some 15 year old F250 and have their instagram handle plastered on the back or some stupid hashtag like #YEEET or some shite like that.
On the bright side it makes it easier to identify a guy most likely to be a massive tool.

Very few actually need it. Guys just want to be able to say they have it

Mine is an 02 F250 with 7.3 turbo diesel. I plan on driving that truck until I die.... Dont really care what others think of it.

The Rv market is extremely hot right now has been for several years.
A good toy hauler will require a truck able to tow 20,000+ that might be some of it. Plus they are trucks if you don't use a truck for truck things don't own one please.

Gotta love all the macho men who “need” the largest truck possible in order to drive back and forth to Exxon six days a week.
Idiots.
Idiots.
