Just came across this and found it hilarious. Thousands of confederates traveled to Brazil after the war and founded a city. Descendants today still celebrate them.

IDK about hilarious, but it is kind of ironic that the "developed world" would view this celebration as a threat, while people in the near-jungle have figured out that rednecks are just one more stupid little traditional culture with its own inexplicable flags, rites, foods, mores, etc. that you can drunkenly embrace once a year and then forget about.

You want to really get your mind blown? There's a story about a plantation owner in Mississippi who freed all his slaves and paid for their passage back to Liberia.

Those slaves immediately landed in Liberia, rounded up their own slaves, started planting cotton, and ended up building big Greek Revival mansions. They even names their towns and rivers after places in Mississippi.

And it gets weirder: Those guys became the ruling class of Liberia. Socially, economically, and politically. For over 100 years.

They weren't overthrown until a civil war that lasted into the 1980s.

I wonder how theyd feel if that "stupid little traditional culture" had taken up arms against them in their own land. Let's not pretend it's even close to the same dynamic.

It’s really sad that they had to flee their country to escape persecution

Are they really "inexplicable" or is it just that you don't know where they come from?

racism in this country will truly never end until we march down to Brazil and demand a foreign government tear down any remnants and destroy any records of this disgrace.

What's funny? They fled to Brazil because it was the last country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery.

They never had to find out because they never oppressed that little culture with laws that rigged things against them. Appears that they got along fine under reasonable government.

Let’s not pretend secession happened in a vacuum.
