You could also try an epidural first to see if that does anything

Helped a tiny amount. I’m scheduled to do a second this Friday. Will plan on trying to hold out for 2 more weeks and then go ahead with it.

Hoping the recovery isn’t too tough and at some point I can get back to playing golf.

It’s not that bad. PT and stretching are important though. I had a fusion on my L5/S1 last October. Now that’s a brutal recovery.

I woke up on a Monday morning not able to stand up

Had played golf Sunday and was hitting ghe ball farther after working on my swing, esp hip turn. After 6 holes, I felt some numbness. After 18, I had a 90 min drive from LC and had to stop in Jennings and stand up, stretch, anything to get relief

Went to a chiropractor that Mon before work and he got my spine in a position that allowed me to stand and work. Thought I’d be fine. Tues morning same thing. Made MRI appt for noon.

Herniated disc at L5-S1. Called NeuroMed Center in BR and got first available appt tge following Tues. i was in a wheelchair. Doc spent 15 minutes explaining the options and said if I would admit to OLOL, he could do a microdiscectomy in the morning before a procedure he already had scheduled there

Went under at 8:30 in BR. Stood up at 12, and was home by 2. I saw patients the next day. A full schedule. Played golf 7 weeks later. Some paresthesia of my left big toe, but no ther long term problems, other than protecting it in my backswing, affecting my distance and overall game.

I had this surgery about 15 years ago. It was 100% successful. Pre surgery I could barely sit and pain meds didn’t do anything for the pain. I knew it was successful the minute I woke up from surgery.

Get the surgery man. My recovery was a few weeks and this was 10 years ago. It’s not that serious of a procedure compared to a fusion

I’m about two weeks into the compressed nerve and the pain is so tough. Managing it with pain medicine but it doesn’t fully go away.
I work in this field. I would not have surgery if the pain started two weeks ago unless you have some type of severe motor loss or intractable pain. You should fail PT and injections before jumping into surgery. There is no going back from spine surgery.

Thanks.

I had the annular tear in March. PT and dry needling throughout the summer. Haven’t been able to sit or bend over without pain since March. The nerve pain started two weeks ago as the herniation either got big enough to hit the nerve or started two weeks ago.

I’m inclined to wait, but the nerve pain is unlike any other feeling. I probably would have don’t the surgery already if I knew the tear got repaired when they did the procedure. Since the tear stays open, I don’t see why I wouldn’t give it another two weeks.

I’m able to walk around with a limp and white knuckle the pain for now, just worried about long term damage if the disc material doesn’t start shrinking soon and relieve the compression.

Neuromedical Center in BR next to Perkins Rowe. They fixed me up. After 4 hour surgery and 8 staples in my back, I woke up in recovery with no numbness, no pain or nerve impingement weakness. Changed my life baw.

Had a herniated L5/S1 (this and the L5/L4 disc are very common). I had that 17 years ago and the dr told me he could do surgery, but PT and weight loss are the best options. Ended up doing two rounds of steroid shots. The first one worked immediately, but the pain came back after a few weeks. He did another round, but said he used a little different meds and targeted the area in a different spot. This one the pain remained for a few weeks but subsided. Did the PT for a few months and went in a pretty strict diet.

Had to make some changes at work such as stand at work or if I can’t then to make sure I stand every 20 min and stretch out the back. I also recall for about a year or so afterward, whenever I had a lot of activity such as golf or moving things around, that numbness would come back in my lower leg. Some Advil and more focused stretching would usually solve that pain. However, after a period of time I didn’t even think about anymore. I continue many of the stretching exercises I had done in the past and still work to maintain a healthy weight and strong core.

Good luck - sounds like the replies have a good mix of PT and let it solve itself and quick surgery. Which I guess is about right: never a straight answer.

Find a neurosurgeon that does 10-20 of these surgeries a month. Not some dr that might do 5 or 6 a month.

Some orthopedic surgeons are spinal trained, and do different types of spinal surgeries. Fusions especially.
Again get a well qualified neurosurgeon.

I did. L-5 S-1. 2004. It worked great for sciatic pain but the disc space will eventually collapse leading to facet pain and arthritis. If possible, see if artificial disc is in play. Don’t do a fusion.

The surgery fixed it for four or so years but the left leg pain/numbness eventually came back, when it gets in the top of your calf muscle is hell.

I have degenerative disk disease in my low back. Diagnosed back in 2018 and have dealt with the pain since. Ive never had sciatica, thankfully, but lately I've been having a lot of pain in my calf area. Idk if injured my calf or if it's related to my back issues. I have a Dr appt on the 30th. Can you tell me about your calf issues?

I had sciatica for years and could deal with it, it sucked but when it got in the top of my calf nothing would help.

I assumed it was related to my disk problem, I had an epidural that fixed it.

Of all the pain, numbness, surgeries on and on the calf pain was by far the worst.

Yep. 2 years ago Laminectomy w/ tumor removal from the spinal cord. 6 months ago I had a laminectomy / discsectomy L4/L5. Pain was gone, but 3 months post op the disc did re-herniate and pain came back. The disc has since absorbed back and no pain. There def is a chance it will heal, but only you know how long you can deal with it. Discectomy took less than an hour. Slight numbness in the right leg post op but eventually went away. I was only pain free sitting, standing and walking I broke out in cold sweats. I would do it again.

Where exactly is the pain on the calf?

If one of your disks has herniated, it can push on one of your nerve roots (L5 or S1) which can send sciatica pain shooting into your arse check, outside part of hip, outside portion of calf, and into shin/foot area and make your big toe week while also causing numbness/tingling in the foot.

The sciatica pain is like someone constantly stabbing a knife into the spot over and over and over and over and over.

This is what an orthopedic surgeon told me. It took about 6 months, but I got better.

That sounds a lot like what I'm dealing with. The calf pain is at the very top of my calf, but I also feel pain in my right shin and my feet have been killing me. Now, I was also diagnosed with plantar fasciitis back in 2018 as well, and that comes and goes. It's all so frustrating.

I had L4-5 microdiscectomy five years ago and it worked. I was in excruciating pain before, now it’s fine
