They used to send the mobile collection unit to the office every other month or so... donated plasma every time.... Was well over 8 gallons of blood donations with the Red Cross before moving into LA where the state does their own.

Got that good O+ flavor.

During the height of Covid the donation center in BR was paying $150.00 per donation. I went every week for several months. Did not feel my best after each donation. Not bad but a bit off for the rest of the day. The BioLife clinic on Coursey was very clean and the staff is generally pretty friendly.

I did it before. It’s a piece of cake, just time consuming.

I donate periodically at the Red Cross facility in Bham and they call me daily wanting me. You can do it about every two weeks. I would do it more often but it takes about three hours and isn't an exactly pleasant experience. It's not too painful but if you're hydrated too much, you can't go to the restroom. If your not hydrated enough, it makes the process more difficult.

One time I smooth passed out. Out out. Woke up with orange juice dribbling down my chin! Must have been hilarious to watch.

I donated this past Christmas several times over the course of a few months. The BioLife Center off Coursey was great. It is a real mix bag of people, not just the stereotype.

I was initially offered $800 but never booked my first donation and after some time I got an email offering $1000. It basically broke down to $80 first appointment and $170 for the second for four weeks straight. After that first month I was getting $40 for first and $80 for second.

I always just took a book with me, laid in the bed, and read while I listened to music. Honestly some times getting my finger pricked to check my blood before donation was worse than the needle. But I did have 1 time where they struggled with the needle and cut my donation off early (I still got full payment). I just had to use my other arm for multiple appointments while the right arm's bruise faded away.

Overall it was a very positive experience but I am the type of person who enjoyed the free time those donations gave. From start to finish I was often there for 2 to 3 hours. So to me I looked at it as a part time job that paid me $20 an hour.

No going to lie that needle felt like a large nail in my arm after about 30 mins.

It is a 17 gauge needle. It's a big one. Same size they use to drain your arse at the funeral home (no joke).

I always used Octapharma Plasma. They give you the standard bonus month to start. Then it is $60 per visit after that. They don't require an appointment like BioLife.

CSL is another plasma center, with a well deserved reputation of being unprofessional pricks.

Takes 1.5 - 2 hours. Get there when they open at 7 and I am usually walking out by 8:30 or 8:45 at the latest.

For me it's been working out to $34 per hour. I lie there and get on Facebook and this forum.

I did on my college campus once. Drank a lot of water beforehand. Started chatting up this co-ed and we fell for each-other. It took so long though and with each passing minute I thought I was going to burst like a federally funded dam. Phlibootymist said I was done and I ran out of the bus to go drain my monitor lizard. I went back but she was gone. Sheila, baby, I still love you!

I worked 2 jobs and sold plasma twice per week to earn my degree. It was not pleasant especially the chills as they returned from after the centrifuge, but also not that bad. Magoo's was next door, so I would get a Syrian bean pita and a Dixie afterwards and before going back to class.
Got my degree with zero debt.
I never liked it, but the combination of helping people and easing my education costs convinced me that it needed doing.
I later donated blood and platelets for people in need.

I’ve donated around 200 pts of blood, over the years, when I worked.

I’ve donated Platelets or Plasma. Mostly for friends at MD Anderson.

Welp. My first time wasn’t a success. It took a while because of the physical and screening process. I definitely felt like the only guy in the room with a college degree. One guy gave me a “tip” and told me to pretend I was dyslexic so they would read everything to me. I finally made it back to the room with the beds. By the way the nurses (or whatever they were) talked to the donors, you could tell many were regulars.

I had a light lunch, but didn’t start donating until 7PM. I was halfway through when I felt faint, literally saw the stars, damn near passed out. I had to tap out, but still got paid. I am going to follow the instructions a bit better and eat before I go and hydrate like hell.

ETA: some chick had to disconnect because her van was getting repossessed.

No. At my last routine old man blood test, they asked if I was going to pass out.

Did a long time ago during a rough patch.

Got 50 bucks a visit for my first so many visits. Stopped going once the payout lowered. You waited forever with some...questionable people.

Heard that rare blood types paid more, which is where that $800 figure likely comes from.

That’s putting it lightly. I taught in the hood, so it wasn’t anything I haven’t seen up close. It was just a snap back to those days. I was the only white guy in the place.
