When you realize that drinking just costs you money, like smoking, with no real tangible benefit, you find a good habit to replace it with.

Well folks in rehab know you can only control “the day” and not plan to quit for a lifetime. One day at a time.

I'd suggest working on self control in other areas. Every once in a while, it's good for you to mentally tell yourself "No" to something you want. Whether it's a piece of dessert, watching a movie, having a drink, taking a nap.

The idea is that you can get yourself used to neglecting a "want" and establishing that your mind is in control, not your impulses. If you can do this with small things, you'll begin to do it with larger things and your life can improve in many areas.

Moderation and controlling your impulses is key.

Good luck, OP.

There is no certain strategy or formula to quitting or cutting back any habit. It depends on your level of self control and mental state.

Some need outside help, some must quit cold turkey because they can’t limit intake or frequency, and some can control themselves and still occasionally have a drink. Do what makes you happy and feel good about yourself

I agree with all of this, but would add "and doesn't harm the people who depend on you."

I know this just seems like “normal drinking” but every book says not to do it.

Every book says for alcoholics not to do it. You're not an alcoholic.

Yeah you got slapped with the omg internet alcoholic because you drink and occasionally get drunk.

Not in the slightest. I try to not drink at all during the week. Have some over the weekend, but I have become obsessed with not feeling like shite the next day. I stick to lite beer, no whiskey, no craft beer, and drink water.

If I come home on Wednesday and the mood strikes me, I can drink 1 or 2 and then stop and not feel bad about it.

ETA: sounds like you have grown up, you're starting your break up with alcohol. Some here and across the internet will have you thinking you'll be sucking dick behind the dumpster for a MD 20-20 if you have a glass of wine with dinner.

As I’m typing this I realize I haven’t had a drink in 2 months. I think a lot of people just kind of grow out of it with age.

Yep. A lot of people pussy out as they get older

I started training for various athletic goals and I’ve lost the taste of beer. I’ve never enjoyed whisky etc. occasionally I’ll have a beer - I don’t miss it

these hangovers suck

This is the sole reason that reduced my consumption. I cannot deal with the hangovers.

If I’m on vacation I’ve found myself throwing in a few waters between drinks as well to keep the hangovers away.

Spoiler alert:
Normal drinkers don’t have to alter their drinking patterns. Best of luck but it seems you could be destined for abstinence like the rest of us.

Spoiler alter #2:
Life gets SOOOO much better without booze. Care-free, relaxed, present, and all the events I needed booze with, are way more fun now.

These days I'll forget to drink.

I've got an in home bar so access and supply is never an issue but I just don't visit it...unless i want to. And I just want to less.

I may get a hankering for a certain drink. A mint julep, or a Bloody Mary, or a grasshopper. And I'll make that drink. But it's no longer nightcaps that go to 3 am, or killing a case over the afternoon.
My beer fridge stays full because i hardly go in it. I think I've had the same 12 pack of hard cider for months. I'll just grab one every so often and enjoy it.

I like it better this way. No hangovers. No stumbling. No binging.

Just...if I want a drink, have one
But I find myself indulging in other drinks more frequently. Some nice ice cold milk. Coffee. Tea.

This 5 calorie a bottle peach drink from Aldi. It's amazing. Me and my daughter love it

Water with lemon and ice is great.

Unsweet tea.

I went almost a full year without drinking and I agonized over it.

I didn't feel that different. Didn't get those moments of clarity (that came from stopping some other things that were really messing with my head)
But I was told not to drink so I didn't drink.

I really don't like being told I CAN'T do something.

So I tried some non-alcoholic beers. They were okay.
But they didn't have the flavors I wanted.

My grandma always said "balance is the key"

So I allowed myself balance and self restraint and I've been able to keep a fairly even keel for a year or so. Not forbidding myself but not going overboard either. If it stops working I'll reevaluate

I had to slow way down because it was causing major problems. My dad I guess just aged out of it as others have mentioned. From as far back as I can remember until his 50s he’d drink a pint of Old Charter every night. Dad is an extremely funny man and was great sober. His first drink or 2 he was even funnier but I’ll always remember that 3rd drink he’d checkout and just listen to music until he finished his bottle and he’d slur, and stumble to bed. To this day I’ve always admired him but said I’d never be drunk like him and I ended up way worse. Glad I have control of it now. Dad seldom drinks now. I’ve seen him drink 1-2 beers in last few years

Sounds like you’ve only ever talked to one therapist and he/she sucks.

There’s not one factual or true point in your entire post.

next one will probably be July 4. Nowadays I’ll drink a beer, wine, or something like a Bloody Mary.

This is confusing. Are those not drinks?
