Has anyone dealt with a family member with a gambling addiction problem?

What is the best course of action to try to get them help. They obviously don't think they have a problem but ask to borrow money from multiple people every month or so. I don't know what they are using to gamble whether it be a website or bookie but it is becoming a major problem. I'm trying to help them get control before it spirals out of control. Any advice is appreciated

From what I've read it's one of the tougher addictions to beat.

waste of time, just dont lend them money and tell their spouse to put all money and property in their name and only give the addict an allowance.

In terms of affecting a normal life, gambling is really bad and the one that can destroy your life the quickest.

Not a family member but a friend. He was addicted to pills and gambling, he kicked the pills first, the gambling took longer

I want to say that as well, but if you truly care about the person I'd try to help them at least once. It likely won't work, so you'll have to prepare yourself for that. But most people won't be helped if they don't want help or aren't prepared to recognize that they have a problem.

Have a sister in law that is in charge of her brothers finances. He's been on a allowance for 8 years now. He'll be 60 years old next month. It is kind of pitiful.

Good luck to you, but if they don't think they have a problem there's nothing you can do to help them.

How did that get legal control of their finances. This person makes 100k plus, pays some child support but doing well and is broke every freaking week.

Yes... I myself had a problem and didn’t think I did until I hit rock bottom...
Unfortunately that’s what it’s gonna take for them...
There are support groups out there...gamblers anonymous is one.. but they have to want the help first
Quit loaning them money is a start
Good luck

Step #1 - quit 'loaning' them money.
Step #2 - they generally disappear after step #1

This right here. Just like any junky the only way an addict can even begin recovery is to admit there is a problem. Doesnt matter if they are doing a group or going cold turkey, they wont even begin to try unless they can admit that its a problem. Good luck, any kind of addiction is a beast.

Gambling addiction is one I'll never get. I get drugs and I get alcohol. I have very extensive experience with all 3 and enjoy all 3 , but the latter 2 it's very obvious how one could get addicted and quickly
I just don't understanding the gambling addiction. I know it's real and I know it's horrible. I'm assuming some people are just wired wrong and they only feel alive when they lose money.
I love to bet on college football for fun, sometimes golf or NBA finals or something. But immaterial amounts of money and just for the conversation with friends usually or to get myself invested in other games I normally wouldn't be. But I could never gamble again and barely notice.
It's really sad though, I've seen it tear families apart because it can spiral so quickly and financially ruin entire families, sometimes for generations.

My dad wasted a good portion of his life and savings in the casinos in Tunica.
He'd get piss arse drunk on Aristocrat rum and just feed hundred dollar bills to $5 slot machine. He'd lose $3000-$6000 dollars every weekend. It got so bad he started doing cash advances on credit cards and writing checks. There was nothing you could say or do to stop him.

You could try contacting CORE in Shreveport. It's free for Louisiana residents. Look them up. Unfortunately, there aren't that many options available, when compared to alcohol and drug addiction.

Tell them to always split 8's and aces.

The science behind slot machines sucking people in is the same science used for smartphones FYI. Saw a Ted Talk on this
