I saw something on Fox or TWC or one of the others that estimated that only 16% of homes in Houston have flood insurance. That seems like a low percentage to me.

I wouldn't doubt that. People aren't compelled to buy flood insurance when it isn't mandated. Sad, but true. I know people that didn't flood in Ascension parish and EBR that still don't have flood insurance despite what happened here last August.

I've also been obsessive about it. But just like last year, I aim to be well informed and without the huge threat to us as of now, I can help the ones closest to me be informed. I'm not one to freak out though, so it's a bit daunting to talk some people down who are sandbagging their houses in places that got an inch in their house last year.

They feel like if the beat that flood, they're not going to be flooded.
I'd remind them to look at Houston, who's seen about 20" more in places than we did last summer. There's always a new worse case scenario lurking out there, and it's worth the pretty cheap premiums being outside of the 100 year zones for the just in case scenario.

Yeah my wife has been feeling the same way, we went from flood, to quickly rebuilding, to a baby in early November - I don't think she ever really had the chance to deal with it all and now that feeling is hitting her hard.

What was the percentage of BR homes that got flooded and actually had flood insurance? Seems like it was quite low like 20 or 30%

So what do these people do? Does their homeowners insurance cover anything at all or do they have to take out second loans for repairs?

SBA loans. Disaster assistance? Not sure what else there is out there.

file for FEMA assistance, and then claim a loos for the rest on last years taxes to get some money up front....

It's true. It's just way too close to what happened to us last year. There's still a lot of people who aren't even done rebuilding so watching this happen to Houston is causing a lot of fear and PTSD, even though it's likely not going to happen here. I can't lie, I've been obsessively following this storm since last Tuesday/Wednesday. So while I'm not trying to freak out on the outside, I've been sick and uneasy just WATCHING so many going through it. People who haven't experienced loss from natural disasters may find it harder to understand.
For sure. I've been keeping as close ab eye as I can on this storm. I'll feel alot better in a couple of days.

I don't believe home insurance helps you for any natural disasters.

I am one of the biggest anti-insurance people in the world. I have flood insurance insurance.
I live in Katy where areas of town are flooding. My area is ok and should be fine. I will drop my insurance.
I piss away more money fricking off in a weekend than a years worth of flood insurance.

I wasn't affected last year and I was still watching this super close.
FYI Hobby is now accessible per a Houston news twitter but no word of when operations can/will start back.
