How old are these dudes?
This sounds like a generational thing

No kidding. Business cards are definitely still common practice in DC

Dude, you know you hand out cards in the ER lobby.

Perhaps they are accustomed to doing business internationally? The exchange of business cards is considered absolutely critical to establishing a business relationship in Japan, for example.
Not only that, you have to know how to hand it to them

Business Cards Rock!
Exchanging business cards at a meeting is like Honey Badger and ODB exchanging jerseys at the end of a game.
Not having a card is unprofessional and looks bad when everyone else is trading them.
I use them from time to time, mostly vendors. I have a junk drawer where I toss them all in. I rarely need to contact these people if ever so I am not going to take the time to enter their data into Outlook. But if I need have a question on pipe, I can sift through the junk drawer to find the guy that took me to lunch three years ago pushing HDPE on me.
Plus it's always a boss move to hand one out to a chick at happy hour. She sees you have a legit job, a good position, you score.

He has stuck that business card up his arse. He has power over you now.

In the real world you learn pretty quickly exchanging cards is not about the contact info on them.

Pick that up and put it in your damn wallet. Now.

I hope for your business's sake you never have to deal with the Japanese. Insult them by not taking their card or handle their card with little respect and you'll quickly lose their respect and potentially their business.

Engaging with the Japanese for business is a totally different ballgame that I had to learn. I had no idea a handshake at the beginning was considered rude.

One place I will never again hand out my business cards is any kind of large meeting where a lot of vendors have tables, etc. set up. The last time I did this, my junk email doubled.
ETA: And then there were the follow-up calls from these people...

Though antiquated they may seem, they aren't going away anytime soon.

You really sound miserable as frick

To the OP:
You sound inexperienced and lacking of business etiquette and protocol.
Business cards improve image and perception. If someone takes care of the small details, I can trust them with the bigger responsibilities.

same. Also, there is an app out there apparently that you can snap a pick and it will store and sort them by company name, or however you want. I haven't downloaded it but my boss has it. She snaps a pic and then throws the card away.
