I was pretty young but I remember my dad taking me out with a telescope to look at it multiple times. We lived in rural northern England at the time, so it was plenty dark.

There were two spectacular comets within a few months or maybe a year of each other. I forget the name of the other one.

We went backpacking in Arkansas for a week and got great views away from city lights. When we got back to the vehicle the Heavens Gate mass suicide was all over the radio. Weird.

I'm going to say BS. How do you take into account the fact that the stars don't move in your picture?

Suffice to say I had the camera and a tracking telescope on a German equatorial mount. The tracking telescope was focused on a star and with the software on my laptop moved the mount with the movement of the stars; so the stars appear stationary while the motion of the comet can imaged. Do you want to know more?

Astrophotography technology. Either telescope of some cameras come with star tracking technology.

I saw it on a night flight out of my plane window at 35000 feet. Awesome.

I didn’t see that but last 4th of July I was on a late flight out of Atlanta to BR and I watched fireworks all the way back. I thought that was kind of neat.

The people who died actually believed that there was an UFO flying behind the Hale-Bopp comet and it was coming to earth to pick them up. I don't remember where they thought they were going

I'd forgotten about how visible it was. I think we just took it for granted after a while.

After the Heaven's Gate mass suicide, SNL did a spoof on the Nike "Revolution" commercial, with actual clips from the HG aftermath videos. It was because the HG cult members were all found wearing Nikes.

The video has since been scrubbed from the internet.

SORRY, VIDEO IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE

They also did a Heaven's Gate victory video sketch in which "Ted Koppel" interviews the cult members after their triumphant voyage on board the comet.
