No, they committed suicide because they thought that killing themselves was going to release their bonds to all Earthly concerns and allow them to hitch a ride on an alien spaceship that was following right behind the comet. The alien spaceship would then take them away to a higher existence. They had patches on their arms that said "Heaven's Gate Away Team". They bought alien abduction insurance. Also, some of them went to Mexico to voluntarily be castrated.
