The walking part is total bullshite. Thanks for your bro science. I used to burn about 35% more calories on my runs than I ever did by walking.
The carb advice is not bad, though. The Whole30 is a great program if you want to drop a lot of weight safely and not deal with horrible hunger issues. The transition from burning carbs to burning fat sucks for runners, but it becomes fricking awesome on the other side of it.

Just get out there and do it. Run until you feel you can't, take a break (meaning walk, don't stop), then start running again as soon as you feel able. Pace yourself. You will be surprised how much lower your overall time will be if you run slower for a longer time. This is especially important starting out. Worry about going faster later.
Pushing yourself is part of the fun, but set a reasonable goal each time you go out there. The couch to 5k should be good enough to go by. Of course there is going to be some discomfort and soreness. This is part of being out of shape. If there is actual pain then dial things back. I never did static stretches. There seems to be some controversy about this. I read that they can actually be counter productive. I just do a brisk walk to start out to warm up.
Others probably have more informed opinions, but this is what has worked for me.

I actually track calories and eat fairly well. I've lowered my intake to 1700 calories.
I eat 40% protein, 35% fat, and 25% carbs.
Fats are nuts, eggs, peanut butter, and from meats.
Carbs are veg, bananas, dates, wheat bread, and natural sugars.
Only drink black coffee, water, and the occasional diet soda.

That is an extreme for someone your size. That probably puts you at losing 4lb/week with no exercise. I think you'll quickly burn out on something so aggressive.

How much weight have you dropped since eating 1700cal per day?

I've seen a few people recommending Brooks shoes and I want to chime in too.
Brooks has a few shoe lines depending on what you're looking for in your shoe. I grabbed the Adrenaline GTS X a few years ago for added heel cushioning and the extra wide width. I can't say enough about how much they helped when I was running 5 days a week.
Also, stretching is very important. This was my typical routine: 10X Head Rolls in both directions, Shoulder Shrugs, Calf Stretch into Achilles Tendon Stretch, Thigh Stretch Standing, and then Hamstring Stretch. Then 20 jumping jacks to finish getting warmed up. After the run, the entire routine got repeated. Even though I was in horrible shape, I managed to avoid any injuries except some soreness.
Also, you might want to wait on the Couch to 5K or relax it a little. If you overdo it easly, you're more likely to get fed-up and start finding ways to avoid running or stop running altogether.
Good luck, have fun, and stay positive.

You probably shouldn't be running at 300+ pounds. Start with a low impact activity like stationary bike or elliptical or you're going to wreck your knees. The tough part is giving the same effort on the elliptical that you would if you were running. You should be out of breath at the end.

Get on the Arc Trainer. It's much harder than Couch to 5K imo and no impact.

Listen to Vette Guy- you NEED Brooks Beast shoes. This is non-negotiable. Go to a real running store- Phidipiddies (sp?) in NOLA area or I hear Red Stick is good in BR.
Second 1700 cals./day is too little- you can't keep it up and enjoy life. The new reccomendations show a man needs about 3000 cals./day. What people discount is where those calories come from. You can eat within reason as much lean meats and fruits/veggies as you want. Protien shakes made with chocolate powder, bananas, PB, milk and honey taste as good as any choc. shake. Try to keep it around 2200-2500/day- don't cheat- measure it. Have a cheat day once/week. You need an eating situation that you can stick with long-term that's sustainable.
Exercise- DON'T frickING GIVE UP. If you feel like you can't go anymore, pray to God that if you fall, you'll at least fall in the ditch so a car won't run you over and keep going. Go 1/4 at a time. Build up 1/4 mile each week. frick the haters- 14 min/mile is a marathon pace- you're just working your way up. Keep Lifting- try lighter weights, 2 sets/15 reps each whole body- work the whole thing 2x/week. No rest- do a set of bench, go do back extensions. Rinse, repeat. It'll keep your heart rate up.
Run/Cardio 3x/week- M,W,F
Weights (whole body- say 2 exercises/part- 2x15 sets) T, Th.
This is a marathon, not a sprint.
Godspeed.....oh, and....
Nothing tastes as good as being fit feels.

My advice, don't wear a cotton shirt unless you bandaid your nips
That chafed nipple pain is a special kind of pain

Yeah bro science considering I have a PhD, jackass.
My point being that "running" at 15 min/mile is negligbly better than walking yet he is pain and potentially injuring himself. Even if your inaccurately measured 35% is true (which it's not), 35% in his case may equate to a 70 to 100 calorie difference. Thus, eating 100 calories less per day is much more efficient, easy, and safe.

if you like your hips, knees and ankles bike don't run
Posted on 1/12/16 at 7:26 am to X123F45
I just started back as well
Give yourself 2 days off between runs for the first 3-4 weeks, your knees and muscles need that time to recover.
Yes, it's ok to run if still a little sore. But if there's any swelling don't run until it's gone.
Nothing wrong with the pace don't go for speed improvements yet, you'll wind up with an injury. Pace will improve with time.
Stretch more; this will make you less sore and improve your pace. Stretch better; Google best ways to stretch for jogging. You'll be shocked at what you're not stretching right or what you're forgetting to stretch

Some of y'all have sensitive nipples. The only time nipple chaffing was an issue for me was 20+ miles in.
To OP, start slow and get some good shoes. You're not out to set personal records. When I started I couldn't run more than a half a mile at a time. You'll build up eventually and reduce your chances for injuries.
