So I wonder if he was like diving for the football, and didn't realize the sandbar was there and went head first? Or maybe got tackled and his head planted into the sand bar? Weird accident. Sad for sure.

No chance you let her marry him if you actually care about her and the guy is a dick if he thinks otherwise.
Two good friends of mine from college dated for forever and were engaged. The guy died in a motorcycle accident 4-5 years ago and his parents still treat her like she is their daughter in law, which is nice, but I'm talking like they insist she still wears the ring and everything. The girl went through enough, but watching someone who is having to go through a tragic event is one thing, but then forcing them to essentially just turn a shoulder to it ever happening is honestly worse and sickening.

It is sad, but they should put more info on the injury
Was he diving into to unknown depths of water? That would be a major freak accident to just swim into a sandbar and get paralyzed like that.

You're misunderstanding what I'm saying. It is a tragic situation all around.
My point is that she either becomes responsible for him for the rest of her life (which would require absolutely incredible amounts of courage and pure love) or she is put in a situation where people say she's selfish because she didn't marry him.
They'll trot out some platitude like "if she really loved him, it shouldn't matter whether he's paralyzed or not."
But that is complete bullshite, and if those people were in the same situation, you can take it to the bank that they'd be singing a different tune.

The only people who actually think like this though are people who are more than likely a part of the situation, I.E. the grooms family.
If she chose to marry him then awesome. More power to her, but she shouldn't feel inclined to stick around because the Father/Mother-in-law guilt trip the frick out of her. Anyone who thinks that way is selfish beyond belief. She has a right to live a life of her own, and while she isn't coming out of anything paralyzed, it's not like she'll be fine and dandy moving forward, psychologically speaking I would assume.

He should refuse to marry her. Just refuse and tell her it will never happen and he wants her to go on with her life. He needs to be firm, no matter what she does. He can't drag her into that on the front end. I wouldn't judge either one for whatever decision they would make, but it is best for her for him to say no.
What a tragic situation. I feel really bad for them both. If he loves her, though, he has to say no. She never would have chosen him if he were a paraplegic. If it happens after you're married, that is one thing, but if it happens before, he needs to send her away.
And, I know that will tear them both to pieces, but I think it is right.
