It's possible he was bodysurfing a decent wave, got caught up in the circulation, and was thrown headfirst into the sandbar. Had that happen to a buddy on a beach trip one time. Thankfully the worst that happened to him was a bad friction burn on his face.

That's a real tragedy. We had a local kid who was on his way to being a scholarship swimmer in college dove into a pond on his families property and hit his head on a rock. Paralyzed from the waist down.
About 6 months later, he committed suicide in his bedroom.
