Not sure in BR, but you could catch decent sized blue catfish on the levee a little ways past Algiers Point. It used to be a bunch of black dudes and one token white guy (me) every weekend during the summer

Always figured the current was so strong that it would be hard to catch fish.

But I guess I'm wrong

What kind of fish could one expect to catch in the Mississippi in Baton Rouge?

I lived there my entire life until 18 and I don't think I've ever seen someone catch anything out there.

2-3 Trotlines set in and outside the trees between the river and the gar ponds in WBR during high water can catch well over 100 pounds of catfish twice a day if you run them morning and night. Where he is at on a rod he is just fishing, the catching might happen but unlikely.

ETA you are going to catch Buffalo, Gaspergoo (freshwater drum) and gar as well on the trot lines, we were always picky about what we kept, only relatively small cats, all the other fish and larger cats we knew people that were damn glad to get them and we would drop them off on our way back.

My mom's step grandson has been at their house the past two weeks. They levee is right across the street from their house and the grandson (14) has been going fishing in the river just about every day..

How does that saying go? The worst day fishing is better than the best day at work

—-I used to think that until I got caught in a microburst storm off Buras in January.

Multiple for that current. We used to use railroad spikes and caught tons of big cats at the St Francisville ferry landing. I imagine it’s a lot tougher when that water is that high.

When the river is low we used to fish the ponds on the batture below Gardere and catch hundreds of sac a lait.

t's best to dig holes into the levee to anchor your poles while you sit and wait.

I take two rods and two 18 inch long pieces of 1 1/2" PVC with one end cut on a steep angle and a good size rubber mallet. I'll pound the PVC into the soil and stick the poles in the top to hold them nice and firm. Cast out, get the line tight and sit back and relax until they start biting.
