I always laughed when my employer (had over 6 of them due to contract changes) said "our employees are our greatest resource"
I should add some used "asset" instead of resource.

That’s true. They are the greatest resource. The problem is that they aren’t the greatest priority.

Lawyer won't do anything - my 12 weeks of FMLA is up and its a right to work state, they can fire at will.
It's at will employment. Right to work just means you aren't forced to join a union as a condition for employment.
Even in at will states you still have protected employment classes.

Just say you're LGBTQ and then sue the company.

Most people spend as much or more time with their coworkers than they do with their spouse.
If your spouse walks out on you after 5 years for getting cancer everyone would talk bad about that person because they are a shitty human. Hate to break it to you but corporations have more say than we do in elections. We as humand have to take back morality. Greed is the fuel for capitalism... Time to start humanizing our institutions, public and private instead of becoming robots that only talk to their friends and neighbors about the weather this week.

You should post what you are looking for. I would bet anything you would find a better employee here than on the street.

Every trucking company is looking to hire, so at least you'll be able to find work again when you're ready to come back. And quite possibly there will be signing bonuses to help
My wife works with trucking companies all over the country, so she'll know what company you work for, if you named it.

They are the greatest resource. They are also the most expensive and often the most frustrating.
I'm not agreeing with what the company did, but I think the overlooked thing is how fricked up the healthcare system is in the USA. Specifically the costs. That was obviously a huge factor in their decision to fire.
I'm not saying we go full on government care, but having to pay large premiums each month, then a large deductible on top of that, for procedures no body knows the costs of beforehand is criminal.

Cobra is damned expensive, file for unemployment asap. You were fired instead of laid off and they'll be compelled to formally document the reason. Surprising they didn't transfer you from STD to LTD or simply lay you off.
If fired for cause (I don't see how that's possible) you'll be denied unemployment benefits. At that point consider whether or not an EEOC complaint or labor attorney consult is worth the hassle.
Suggest keeping your powder dry and not bad mouthing them until you've run thru all the options. Once your in a new job, fire away.
God Speed and Good Luck.

But they wanted to you think that you the employee were the priority... or at least a top one.

Goodness y'all are emotional tonight. I asked the OP a simple question and he clarified it for me. I'm not the only one who didn't jump in on the "reeeee the big bad corporations" bandwagon. An employer is not your spouse and it's a ridiculous comparison.
The OP's situation makes no sense from the employer's perspective, and he sounds like a butt-kicking and dedicated truck driver. Thankfully this is a much needed job and he should be whole very soon.

Yep. The older I get and the more I see people having to sell everything they own and start gofundme's for basic medical care because of things like this.

quote:Yep, I realize that now - but I wanted to at least keep my insurance through this last procedure and follow up appointments. As soon as its over and if I'm declared cancer-free, I'll end it and switch over to the other option. Already working on unemployment/disability since I physically cannot work right now - I'm only allowed to leave my house to go to the docs office because I have no immune system, not even my immunizations I got as a baby.

Consult an Attorney and sue for damages. More than likely the HR person who made the call doesn’t know the law.

First I’m glad to see your treatments are going well. Always been interested in a trucker’s life. I can’t imagine having to drive those things through big cities. Seems like interesting work and can see so much of the country and meet some interesting people.

If I was a healthy person I would have my house paid off and be working on buying a lake house with all the medical bills I have paid. Sucks but that was the hand I was dealt. Just feel like there are plenty of others like myself that have struggled, are still productive members in society but get lost in the fray. 28 billion in economic burden for epilepsy. There are plenty of other conditions people live with that are productive members of society... But we are treated as a burden instead of humans much of that is because healthcare is tied to corporations.

They should have put you on LTD if you have it. I had an employee go two separate 12 week STDs before he went on LTD. If you have it and they didn’t offer it, sue them.
I was coming post this if it wasn't mentioned. Decent Motherfrickers would have put you on LTD before letting you go. This is some bulllshit.

Jobs that actually pay well that are work from home is going to help a lot of people with conditions.

I’m in the freight/trucking industry as well and this is exactly what my company would do. It happened with former colleagues who had health issues themselves and they’re about to let go another person of 8 years who’s battling cancer himself. It’s sad.
Say did your company happened to be HQ in SC? If so, I work for the same company.
