Got my reminder that corporate America doesn't care about any of us

Just a rant so beware. I've worked for the same company for the last six years, got sick at the beginning of 2021. Went through chemo until the summer of last year and went back to work in July until I had a pet scan in in October and showed the cancer had spread. Doc ordered me off the road and to go through a grueling high dose chemo/stem cell transplant procedure.
I'm one week away from going in for my last treatment. I posted in the GMT last week that my doctors have seen drastic improvement in my tumor markers in the blood and think the procedure is working and gave me a 90% chance of not only surviving this disease, but being cured. I'll find out in early April at the next pet scan after I finish the last part of the transplant.
However - this isn't good enough for the ivory tower of the company I work for who feel that I've been off work for entirely too long. I'm well beyond the 12 weeks of protection of FMLA so they decided today to call me up and fire me.
My health insurance has already been cobra'd - meaning that I'm paying 100% of the cost and the employer contribution has ended. So I'm protected under that for the next 18 months - but I'm still trying to figure out what exactly the company gains by firing an employee on medical leave. As far as I know I'm not costing them a dime right now - as I said the benefits aren't out of their pocket anymore, the short term disability I was getting was at no cost to them...so what's the issue? I've never been reprimanded there and have never had any metric of my job performance fail the highest standard. I had every intention of going back to work for them as soon as my doctor gave me the green light but now? Yikes. I'll spend the next few months getting my resume in order and ready to roll as soon as I'm cleared to work again.
Why fire an employee in the middle of medical procedures like this when it would build loyalty and positive reputation to stick by them in their darkest hours?!
Someone here has to work in a corporate HR - make it make sense to a peon, please. I'm completely dumbfounded by this move today. Just called me up out of the blue and fired me for taking too long to beat cancer.

Share your company name so I know who to never apply to ever.

Thats what corporate America has become. They'll post a job opening for your position and have 100+ applications within a week. Youre treated like a number because you are just a number.

Prayers up for you. Sad to see this happen.

Fired, or laid off?
If they fired you, you should ask for a reason.

You are causing the insurance policy to go up. You’re fired water boy. Seriously great news on your recovery. Keep it up man!

If it's a self funded plan you're costing them a shite load.
Otherwise, looks like you're on your way to bigger and better things.

Dude, that is horrible. I wish I could give you some information, but I have no idea why they would do that, but its pretty shitty.
Its good to hear that you have a 90% chance to survive and that you are near the end of dealing with all of that, but that is the shittest thing a company can do.

The gall you have to get cancer and need time off work! You deserve to be fired by the sound of it. Lazy entitled millennial mindset. If you won't do the work then someone else will.
On a real note, congrats on the recovery. Keep kicking cancers arse and once you're back on your feet, put the old company on blast everywhere you can.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I have been following your story, and wish you only the best on your continued fight and recovery.
Sadly yes, there is no company loyalty anymore. I was fired from my last job because of oursourcing. I had never missed a day of work, and won many internal work awards. None of that matters anymore.
Best of luck to you finding a new situation.

I’m going to get downvoted to hell for this but they fired you because you have been on their books for a year providing them nothing.
Because you’re on medical leave, they can’t replace you in your group because you are counting against the headcount, making the option of adding someone to the team not available. Them firing you is so that they can get someone in there that is currently available to do the work.

I 100% support capitalism, but shite like that is ridiculous. I wish you a full recovery and a job with a more appreciative company with better pay when you do beat it.

I can’t believe you didn’t give them a 2 week notice. It won’t look good on your resume you know.

Sadly, it's not even just private, corporate America.
There's a teacher in my former school district right now with Stage 4 cancer that has been given about a year. He's currently still physically teaching (with a cane to walk) because he used all of his FMLA and the district will drop his insurance. Some of my former coworkers and even teachers in other districts tried to pool sick days to give to him but the state put the kabosh on it. Now he's having to use GoFundMe in order to cover potential expenses of his current treatment for when he gets sick enough he can't work anymore.
Companies aren't loyal anymore. So frick 'em.

Sucks but you are right. They need someone there working. It’s not fair but that’s all there is to it.
