It's been years since the last time I got into some. Used to happen all the time when I was a kid playing outside and in the woods. What I don't recall is how my grandmother used to treat it. Things I recall as possibilities are Clorox in the bath water, Dr. Tichenor's, and Phisohex. Any of those ring a bell as a red bugs treatment?

I've always treated chiggers with clear finger nail polish.

People often believe that bright red spot in the center of the bite is the chigger itself. It isn't. That's the stylostome, and about four to six hours after the chigger bites you, it will start itching like mad. And those stylostomes will keep itching for up to 10 days, as your body battles the foreign substances injected by the chigger. Chiggers can't burrow, and they will be long gone by the time you're praying for relief from the tortuous itchiness they've inflicted on you.

Once you see the bites it's too late.

quote:

Your first step: Take a bath or shower and scrub your skin with soap and water. This washes off any chiggers that are still on you. Using hot water, wash your clothes and any blankets or towels that touched the ground to kill any bugs that are still hanging on. Then treat your bites with an over-the-counter anti-itch cream or ointment, like menthol, calamine lotion, or hydrocortisone. You can also get relief if you take antihistamine pills or use a cold compress.

I got into some chiggers a few weeks ago. It seems there is a bumper crop of them this year. I alternated between applying Apple cider vinegar and then when they started itching again applying a cortisone cream. Neither worked if I applied it 2 time in a row. Then my Mom told me to take an Epsom salt bath. My itchiness was gone by then so I didn't try the bath.

The best treatment is to rub Crisco all over the effected areas.....it will remove any chiggers still on you and make the itching stop almost immediately.

To ensure that they're all removed would mean you have to cover entire body with crisco- who wants to do that? Which is why the clorox bath is hard to beat

2 to 3 days of intensive itching is best case scenario. Good luck.
