So the suicide net slices and diced them to ensure the suicide is successful?

Maybe 350,000 and a yearly or biyearly replacement cycles. Best you’ve going to get using shrimp nets is either plastic or nylon mesh, the salt air and the sun are going to dry rot the net. Which is why they used a steel net, and probably an alloy that is rated for outdoor/marine use otherwise it will have similar issues with corrosion.

Then you have installation costs. A man lift that gets you under the bridge ain’t cheap, and labor costs are going to increase the costs tenfold or more since you can probably only hire California union baws for welding and roadwork. So maybe 3.50 million or even 35.0 million. Then you have to add another 1/3 for some baw to engineer the entire project.

This is the wrong approach, why don’t they just add water softener to all the earth’s water, then no one will ever again fall to their deaths anywhere. Better yet, just add fabric softener to all the water, then everyone’s clothes will protect them no matter if they fall on land or water. Alternatively, just give gravity government support, and it will stop working. Come on, California, we can do this.

The lead contractors in charge of building a suicide prevention net on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge say it will cost about $400 million, more than double its original price because of deterioration on the bridge that was concealed and other problems

This sounds absurdly expensive, an unsightly addition to one of the world’s most beautiful structures, and ineffective. People determined to commit suicide are going to do it somewhere.

Imagine what 400 million could do to address mental health vs a net to catch a mentally I’ll person that can then jump out of said net and into the water below.

This is the right answer, the common sense answer, but is obviously not what the govt will do.

25% would be stolen by various government employees and their friends, 25% would be skimmed for the DNC, and the rest would go towards some half-assed, completely mismanaged program that solves nothing but would exist solely so liberals could point at it and brag about how much they care.

Imagine being so deluded as to think that by preventing suicidal people from killings themselves in one place they will magically no longer be suicidal and not kill themselves. And you’re willing to spend $400 million on that delusion.

Same concept with guns...

Having lost a loved one to suicide specifically from jumping from the Horace Wilkinson bridge in Baton Rouge, reading the responses in this thread is horribly depressing at how callous and cold some of you are toward other human beings.

It's no wonder this world is headed in the direction it is. Some of you are incapable of compassion and empathy.

They’ll just go do it somewhere else right? This is a terrible idea. I read a story about a man who spends a lot of his free time there talking to would-be jumpers and convincing them not to jump. He’s been very successful and does it as a public service. Give the guy a yearly stipend to do it full time

Sounds like the Golden Gate Bridge Authority is willing to pay enough to not have suicides to not be their problem. People will still commit suicide but just not on their property

Does it do anything except deter them from jumping off that bridge and going to kill themselves elsewhere?

Sorry for your loss, but I don’t think a net under the bridge would have made the difference here. Do you? There’s much better uses of that $400MM to help those people. This is vanity money to keep people from jumping off the “iconic Golden Gate Bridge”, so it doesn’t ruin someone’s view

Will a suicidal person not just jump from somewhere else? I don’t think trying to catch them is the best approach to stopping suicide.

My cousin, mother of three, stopped on the bridge during her morning commute and leapt to her death. I was maybe six cars back and didnt see the jump itself.

My exact thoughts before realizing it was her. "Some bitch is jumping off a bridge. Couldn't do it at any other time?"

I stand by the statement actually.

The Horace Wilkinson bridge in BR has a very large number of jumpers. And I firmly believe they avoid reporting it if they can.

Too many nights ive seen an abandoned truck right at the top. Door open. No one around. Cops standing at the edge looking down.

Won’t they simply just go to a different bridge now?
