Verrrrrry nice.

I’m a space nerd and enjoying this mission so much. I’ll have to do whatever I can to go see the Artemis IV launch.

Is this the appropriate spot to talk about future Artemis stuff?

Am I wrong to think it seems impossible for Starship HLS to be ready for the tests in mid 2027 at this point?

I honestly think that’s the main part of why manned landing on the moon was pushed back to 4.

I sure as hell hope they didn’t suddenly realize they needed to practice and test all this mission critical gear mid way through.

NASA wants Starship because it would be the biggest workhorse at moving cargo to the moon. But they don’t like the proposals complexity (around 14 starship launches for the landing): the lander, a fuel depot, and the launches to fill the depot up.

But it was suppose to have a field test of fuel transfer last March which obviously didn’t happen.

They moved the goalposts for starship for the lunar landing to Artemis IV to buy them some time. It was also smart to test the thing in LEO first tho.

Will it be ready for a test on Artemis III in 2027? They really need to pick up the pace.

The good news is, theoretically they just need to get to a stable orbit for Artemis III, they don’t need to be able to refuel yet.

Incorrect. NASA has mandated they need to prove fuel transfer ability to be advanced in consideration, independent of docking testing. The delays in SpaceX doing this is part of why the bidding process was reopened.

It was supposed to have been done in 2024.

It’s scheduled to occur this year as a series of two launches about a month apart but as of now no date has been set.

Coming up on the half way point distance wise between Earth and the moon.

Which highlights how much velocity they lose on the outbound leg, given they still have a bit more to be halfway in terms of time.

I know I already said it, but 10km/s near earth vs .5 km/s at the moon. And it’ll get all that speed back on the return.

I’m sorry but this is getting kinda ridiculous.

This isn’t them trying out new tech and working out the kinks for.

They had the prototype for this on ISS for six years and it was nothing but problems. To the point they stopped even trying to fix it and they just ignored it for the standard toilet they had.

Then for Artemis, they wanna be all “frick it, we’ll use it anyway.”

On a side note, I didn’t realize we had so many space nerds. We need to find a good place to do a Cajun tailgate for the Artemis 4 launch.

It’s now officially closer to the moon than it is to earth.

Any true space nerd will be on Florida's Atlantic coast for that.

Seriously. If there are enough that cares I’m okay with taking point in organizing it.

I just need more than 4 people giving a damn.
