General Motors has decided that displaying Mexican-built crossovers just 3.4 miles from where it is closing a Michigan plant is not a great idea. The promotional display at Comerica Park was set to highlight GM's new vehicles for opening day. The UAW, among others, noted the Blazer is not built in the U.S. GM is closing plants in the U.S. and Canada, and shifting work to lower-cost of labor areas such as China and Mexico in order to keep costs down.

This does not mean that sticker prices will be lower. Only that production costs will be lower so that profits will be higher.

Bbbbbut on December 19, George W. Bush announced that he had approved the bailout plan, which would give loans of $17.4 billion to U.S. automakers GM and Chrysler, stating that under present economic conditions, "allowing the U.S. auto industry to collapse is not a responsible course of action." Bush provided $13.4 billion now, with another $4 billion available in February 2009. Funds would be made available from the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. General Motors would get $9.4 billion, and Chrysler $4 billion.

they cut costs about 70% by building in mexico/c.america, yet the cars still cost the same or more as they did when people here in the USA made them.

Why can we find a way to produce our own goods?

So the UAW is to blame for not allowing GM to build cars and only pay their employees $3.50 a day?

So now producing at lower cost thanks to moving plants to china and mexico and yet prices to buy have skyrocketed! Greed at its best. I could understand rising cost due to production in the U.s. but in mex or china.

Nissan, VW, Audi, Chevrolet, Ford, and Chrysler have been building cars in Mexico for decades.

Think how much tax burden and employee costs it must take for a company to decide that we would be better served to scrap everything we have stateside, set up shop in a foreign country, mess with their taxes, their workforce, and their tariffs... as opposed to keeping employees here.
Sure, there are some greedy SOB when it comes to stakeholders, but I can’t imagine that the setup cost for all that is that daunting compared to what the UAW and Uncle Sam take.

Apparently the average Mexican auto worker makes $3.14 an hour (thanks Google). That's almost 1/10 the hourly wage of a typical American auto worker. For 4000 workers that's a savings of 200 million dollars a year just in labor. After ten years that's 2 billion dollars. Even if it costs a billion dollars to build an auto plant from scratch in Mexico they'd still save another billion dollars after only ten years.
That's a pretty big incentive to relocate. How much of a pay cut can the American workers take to make moving to Mexico unattractive? And I say "unattractive" because it's impossible for it become more profitable than moving.

Go to San Antonio and ask the Toyota employees how much they make and if they're unionized?

Are the vehicles exempt from important tariffs?

No argument. I just ask, if using American labor is unprofitable, how did we get here?
