Apple CarPlay is the only option I care about in a vehicle, guess that eliminates GM

I’ve never been satisfied with the phone interface in a vehicle until I had one with CarPlay. I can’t imagine owning one without it now.

I didn't need another reason to avoid General Motors. For my entire half-century life, GM has been known for shitty products.

I like the Corvette and the Silverado but I'd have never bought one because of their horrible reputation.

This only adds to it.

My dad had a 70s blazer and 80s truck and they were fine. I had a 02 Silverado which was a good truck. Wouldn't buy one today

I have a 2025 Chevy
and somehow the Google infotainment system has managed to screw up Apple CarPlay

Google infotainment needs to be completely gutted. It's an absolute piece of crap. That is nothing but big brother spyware

If I’m asked to pay subscription services for a vehicle I’m buying, I either won’t buy it, or I’ll have researched way(s) to replace the components requiring subscriptions.

If I’m paying tens of thousands of dollars for a product, I shouldn’t have ongoing costs to use features. I’ve heard some manufacturers backed off of this because people were walking away.

Their ICE trucks and SUVs are hot sellers now.

What's infuriating are excellent performance models, like the CT6-V, CT4-V, Camaro, etc. that are lower volume but still profitable......were canceled so the company can invest in "FACTORY ZERO" for EV production.

And those EV's are just not high volume, and they are not profitable at all.

People will start hot-spotting tablets to their phones and mount them on the dash.

Or Garmin or some other GPS company will become everyone's go-to.

Either GM will have to incorporate that functionality into their system (which they have for the most part) or they will cave and build in Carplay again.

Owning the car - not really an issue. Owners will get the app and integrate with the car very easily and probably never notice. Once the initial learning curve is past they'll be fine.

But renting one where the car needs an app to screen share (or a quick test drive) - the car will frustrate people. And that's why I think GM will cave. The short, quick encounters with that car will be "new" and have a learning curve that will annoy some people.

Having used the GM system in EV's without Car Play, I can say that they have a very good system. But my exposure to that was in a very high end Cadillac Lyric SUV with wireless integration across the board. Will even their mainstream and lower end products have all of that functionality? If so - then this might work. If not - then this will backfire in a big way.

Not necessarily. Automotive IT systems go through a range of security certification checks. You can just plug a $50 adapter from Amazon into a USB port and give yourself wireless Carplay, but my guess is that Android Automotive OS will prevent it from having control of the infotainment system.

Semi-serious question I've never considered... Does taking a vow of silence include typing things online/texting/any communication without actually speaking? Maybe that should be its own thread

Man, I was looking through GM brands and all I see is white trash.

Hope that F1 team is more Andretti than GM or they won’t last a race.

Wouldn’t bother me in the least. And make the check engine light only come on when
I’ve run it out of oil instead of if my tire pressure has dropped by 2 pounds on the left front.

THIS

Although I think GM, Toyota, Ford, Subaru, Nissan, and VW are actually doing better in this area than in the past. Even the newer Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Silverado pickups have a lot of hard buttons and toggles, which I appreciate.

There was a Cadillac model (maybe the XT5 or XT6 a few years ago) where everything was either in the screen or used those touch sensors with haptic feedback. No buttons anywhere. Was cool as hell until you had to use it while driving and couldn't take your eyes off the road. It was even on the damn steering wheel.

The newer Mercedes interiors to me are too digital. And I think all those screens will make the car age poorly since graphics and screen resolutions are so easy to update every year.
