I have given some food before but no money. Most will turn down the food offer anyways.

I will buy them a meal and twice in my life I have even given a homeless person a ride across town. I have had conversations with them on numerous occasions, and have been thanked a few times simply for stopping and talking to them.

I wouldn't just give them straight up cash though.

No, I volunteer for a few different organizations in NYC and one runs a soup kitchen every Sunday. I go every week and help clean up after meals have been served. That helps the place continue serving weekly meals, so that's my contribution to the homeless.

I either do not acknowledge their existence or say no before they say anything.

I've been suckered. Especially if they have a dog. I've even bought dog treats and given them so they can have something for the dog. Then was told a particular guy 'drove home' every day. So I happened to be around close to dark and I waited. Sure enough, he packed it up after a while, dog and all, got in his car and drove off. Never saw the car at Walmart or any of the other places you may expect people living in a car to park overnight. I felt stupid but in the end it cost me a few dollars, so I let it go.

Sometimes, but I rarely carry cash. You can usually tell the scammer dope fiends from the truly hopeless in need of help.

I buy them a hooker and a hotel room for one night. Gives them that extra incentive to get a job

NOPE.

Two god damned bums behind the Taco Bell on College ruined it for them all back in 2005.

No. Shelters that house and feed them, and some that provide clothing and addresses for job purposes, only require that they be sober.

In NOLA, Some require they be tested for TB, but there are clinics that will allow anyone in.

ETA: while we are at it, the one guy that really pisses me off is the homeles guy on a bike that usually hits up people around LSU's north gates.

His line is, "god bless you if you could spare money for some food for my daughter."

Same line for 10 years from this guy.

I don't give to the actual homeless people on the street but I will donate money to homeless charities and have given items to women's shelters.

Et too. When I lived in Dallas there was this old, old, decrepit looking old lady with a sign that said "need bus fare to New Jersey". I figured she was trying to get home to visit family before she kicked the bucket and like quite a few others gave her money - five bucks.

I'll be damned if the old bitch wasn't out on the same corner three weeks later with a sign saying she needed money for bus fare to Las Vegas.

I put two and two together and realized Jersey and Vegas both have casinos and she was taking my money and gambling with it.

I asked for my five bucks back. She stared at me like a crazy person. Light turned green and I drove off. Never saw her again but I sure she's out there somewhere traveling the country gambling on other people's dime.
