In a holiday-themed blog post gaining attention this week, the organization, which counts 1.8 million young girls as members, reminded parents to not “force” their daughters to hug or kiss relatives if they don’t want to. Doing so, read the post — which is entitled “She Doesn’t Owe Anyone a Hug. Not Even at the Holidays” — could give kids the “wrong idea about consent and physical affection.”

“Think of it this way, telling your child that she owes someone a hug either just because she hasn’t seen this person in a while or because they gave her a gift can set the stage for her questioning whether she ‘owes’ another person any type of physical affection when they’ve bought her dinner or done something else seemingly nice for her later in life,” it continued.

The blog post has been met with controversy on social media with some people accusing the Girl Scouts of sexualizing innocent family interactions and gestures. Many others, however, have lauded the organization for addressing the important issue of teaching children from a young age about their bodies and consent.

That girl scouts should go out of business while minding their own business.

This stuff is weird. Seems like it should be up to the parents to decide how to raise their own daughters. Maybe the Girl Scouts should stick to selling cookies.

My daughter doesn't even hug every time that I want a hug so I'm definitely not going to make her hug anyone else. The only person in the house that gets free range on hugs from her is her mom

This shits been all over my FB feed. It's really silly to get all pissed off about it. Just let the strange little kids sit at the kids table.

God forbid kids be forced into doing something they don't want to. That's literally child abuse guys.

Hugging people you don’t want to hug sucks. Teach your kids to high five instead.

Don't wanna give your uncle B a hug at Thanksgiving?
Uncle B's Christmas list just got shorter.

It seems pretty simple to me to explain to your child that there is a difference between hugging a relative you haven't seen in awhile and giving an OTPHJ.

We have secret handshakes with all of our relatives. The Cavs stole the idea from my great grandmother

Aw, c'mon....give ol' 90 year old great-aunt Esther a hug and a kiss when she says "give me some sugar!" It might be her last Thanksgiving.

I think some crap organization such as girls scouts isn’t going to influence me one bit on how to raise my daughters.

The good looking psychosis psychiatrist on Tucker last night talked in circular logic on the subject last night. Got a good chuckle.

You are going to “hug” Toddy and you’re gonna like it.
