How do the scammers get the $? Aid is paid directly to the school.
Difference between aid awarded and tuition/fees is refunded back to the student. Scammer will make sure to request the maximum amount of aid available and take whatever they can get. They also do "participate" in the class to keep it going as long as they can. ChatGPT for assignments/test, usually seem to avoid any courses that require video interaction but it's not unheard of for them to do so.
Some places have not adjusted away from pre-online program day where you didn't need to worry about this because the students were there in person at some point. A lot of this shite is preventable just by looking at the submitted information. Phone numbers all over the place, fake transcripts copied and pasted with a logo they found of the school, obvious shite. These places with 10000+ fake accounts were doing no checks at all and just accepting every submitted application.

Ever since that woman was carjacked on campus at UNO, that campus has been a ghost town with half to three quarter empty parking lots. I've been wondering how they even maintain any financial viability. As arse-backwards and inept as their DEI administration team is, I wouldn't doubt it if there were 5,000 ghost students at UNO alone.

physically show up and present a valid ID?
That's racist.

Another problem is universities using online enrollment data to boost the overall enrollment number. NWST does this and it brings business to Natchitoches that ultimately fails because the actual physical student body is much smaller than the “total” number.
That’s probably more an issue of who’s distributing the data to profit, but it’s still an issue.

This would never have happened at LSU if they still had to call and deal with REGGIE to schedule classes.

Everything the federal government turns to shite.

I will say that some students sign up for extra classes and choose sections with popular professors even though they do not need that class. Those sections typically fill up very quickly. They then sell their seat to another student and coordinate the drop and add with each other before payment is made.
Man, scalpers really are out of control these days.

This started with the GI Bill.

still i would think at some point in the process, an actual student has to show their ID IRL before they're officially in the system
These are Democrats though… might not have one
And the colleges don’t mind… more enrollment equals more funding

Can confirm the colleges and universities I’ve worked for have dealt with this as early as spring of last year…
EDIT: Lots of this thread are spot on from my experiences.
They stay long enough for the refund. Then the refund is funneled straight to the student.
Online students don’t typically submit identification to enroll… however, most classes require a student ID for proctored testing.
Which is mostly done remotely by AI which can be “tricked”.
Transcripts and IDs are being faked using AI… they’re really good.
They are doing it from the top SEC type schools down to Community Colleges.
It’s a massive loss of revenue which absolutely impacts tuition.

ID’s are racist remember. You shouldn’t have to prove who you are. Poor people find it difficult to get an ID. Also, people shouldn’t have to show up in person, lol.

During the first Gulf War, when they mobilized the reservists, I saw someone tell a reporter something like, "I didn't join the military to go to war, I joined it to pay for college".
