I've had several over the years. They are definitely not a quiet experience, but will find the issue the Dr. thinks you are having.

Bro just lay down and go to sleep. I’ve had like ten of them. Lay there and chill.
Yeah, I would agree with that. I get MRIs once a year now. It was a bit more frequent but nothing too time-consuming in 2024.
You will lie down for a period of 20-30 minutes. Every minute or so, you’ll hear annoying sounds that will kind of prevent you from dozing off. I’m usually able to fall asleep quite quickly but the sounds from the machine keep me from sleeping.
If you have an order with contrast, they’ll let you know over the intercom that they’ll start with the contrast fluid via an IV that was set up before the MRI.
I would say the contrast provides a mild discomfort, like a 2-2.5 out of 10. Without contrast, the MRI has no discomfort besides the annoying sounds that come from the machine.
I think the newer machines give a less claustrophobic feel as well, but I’ve never noticed much of an issue, either way.

Think happy thoughts. Ponder life decisions that lead you to choose your path. Remember those decisions relating to why you found yourself drunk in the gutter with the torn ACL and broken collarbone and a missing kidney. Keep your chin up and swallow.

Nothing to it, unless you are claustrophobic or something like that. They have plenty of air circulating in the tube, so if you are cold natured, take the blanket when offered.
Seems like you have to lay still for about 20 minutes. Damn good diagnostic tool.

I’ll echo the others who said to make sure you don’t have a Prince Albert piercing, butt plug, or massive gold chain on.
Not speaking from experience, those can cause massive issues.
On a serious note, if you have a pacemaker or other medical device within your body, you can only use certain types of machines. That’s what my doctor said in passing. Also the contrast fluid can cause some issues for people with kidney issues, I believe.

Just be still. I fell asleep. Try not to do that. Sleep twitches not good.
Good luck. Piece of cake (MRI).
Hope knee not too serious.

how frickin long are y'alls MRIs?
I've only had one before and it was last month and I was done in like 3 minutes. They gave me some headphones and said they woudl put on a pandora station for me to listen to; it only played one song plus half of a second and it was over with.

First two I had (both knees) were about 30 minutes. Last one on my brain was about 20 minutes total in 2 steps.

What's it like? Should I prepare for an anal probe?
Loud as F...!
Totally non-invasive but depending on how far in the tube you have to go for your pics it could be a little claustrophobic

Had a mri of my brain once following a tbi. Was an insanely long experience. Could feel the waves and hear them.

You got the fake Somali MRI... They take about 20-30 min.

For a knee you should go in feet first so not so bad. Head in first is much more claustrophobic.
Try getting one on your neck/face. They put you in a face cage. I've had like 8 MRIs

Some of the CT scans and CTAs are a lot shorter than MRIs.
All of the MRIs I’ve taken have been at least 20 minutes, I think. Longer if there is contrast.

I fall asleep the second the machine turns on. But I like to be cold and love a sound machine, so it's a perfect storm to knock me out. Plane engine noises also knock me out.

it's like getting swallowed by a whale and loud noises.

They're a lot faster now.. MRI on my knee in 2018 took 30 minutes, laying still with my bottom half in the machine.
Did one on my brain last year that was 15 minutes first round, then inject contrast and 5 more minutes.
