16,112,566 served.
Less than 500,000 remain.

For those who don't know, Bush was shot down over the Pacific. Here is a photo of his rescue by an American sub after floating in a raft for hours.

I read that at the time he was commissioned, he was the youngest pilot in the Navy.

Factually incorrect.

Forbes Magazine estimates in September of 2018 that 362 US WWII Veterans are dying each day.

My son’s friend has a grandfather who was a paratrooper in WWII - he’s the most decorated officer in the history of the 82nd Airborne. He was in the Battle of the Bulge, Operation Market Garden, and Operation Shingle. Wrote a book and also narrated some of the stuff at the WWII museum. He consulted on the movie A Bridge Too Far, and some parts of it come directly from his book. He’s 101, and even now when he speaks you know you are in the presence of greatness - such a commanding presence.

During the 90s, my grandparents subscribed to U.S. News & World Report. I always liked flipping through it when the latest issue came in. In one of those magazines, I saw a graph that showed how many U.S. veterans were still around from the wars/conflicts that we have waged over the centuries. At the time there were still a few thousand World War I veterans remaining along with several million World War II veterans.

It's hard to believe now that so few remain.

My dads WWII group used to have a reunion every year. Sadly, the group's number started dwindling every year from those passing. The number got so small they eventually had to cancel it because only a few could still travel. I wonder if there are any left from that group?

If you haven’t been to the WWII museum in New Orleans, take a day off and go. Sit and talk with the vets. You could easily spend two days there.

I remember seeing similar numbers growing up in the 90’s. And then there was some sort of ceremony where they had the last living survivor of WW1 from different countries in the 2000’s sometime. Both truly a remarkable generation.
