Best Buy's price matching to online will keep them in the game IMO.

People like to see TV's and hear speakers before buying them often times.

I know I do.

I’m not going to lie, I clicked into this thread expecting a lot sarcastic answers and trolling and now I’m talking a trip down memory lane, remembering all of the great Ike’s I had picking out a toy or movie and realizing why instant gratification sucks.

It actually does make me sad that kids today won’t experience either movie rental or toy stores

the price match and once amazon started collecting sales tax leveled the playing field to the point where some purchases I'd prefer BB.

Easier returns as well

Naw, man. There's nothing like walking into an entire store of toys as a kid.

In my area growing up we had Howard Griffin Land O Toys and Howard Brothers toy store. Both were seasonal.

Later we got Toy World in McMillan mall.

Eventually when pecanland mall opened we got kb toys, circus world and some toy store over by where McAllisters is now.

It took decades to get Toys R Us.

No matter what happens with Party Citys endeavor, there's no way in hell we'll ever get another dedicated toy store.
Hell FAO Schwartz flagship store in New York is gone.

All y'all saying you're sad Toys R Us shut down should have shopped there more often. I guarantee most of y'all haven't set foot in that store more than a handful of times in the last 10 years. I haven't either, but I'm just saying.

Go about 5x a year for last 4 years including majority of Christmas. It was cool being on the other side of the parent /child toys r us experience having done it so many times as a kid.

You could say their prices were high as a giraffe poon, and not be far off.

I am with others though, our nearest toys r us was over an hour away so it was a rare visit. But every time we went to that town it was something I looked forward to all day/ week. Nothing like a full row of GI Joe crap.

What about Montgomery Ward...

When my grandfather would take me over to Coney Island, he would always point out what all those stores used to be

Patients at a New Jersey hospital will soon be able to take in Toys ‘R’ Us symbol Geoffrey the Giraffe.

A massive Geoffrey statue at the toy company’s Wayne, New Jersey, headquarters is headed to Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, according to multiple reports published this month.

“It is my hope that this ‘iconic’ piece of retail history will help ease the stress and anxiety that children face when they need to visit the hospital,” statue buyer Joseph Malfitano told NJ.com via email.

The toy company is holding out-of-business sales at its stores, which will shut down by June 29, USA Today reports.

Malfitano made a donation of around $10,000 to ship Geoffrey, per NJ.com, which explained that his business had counseled the toy company on selling assets.

Not sure about the others, but Best Buy will price match vs Amazon as long as its sold directly by Amazon and not one of their 3rd party vendors. Just pull the item up on your phone and show the cashier.

Pretty much goes for every box chain store. I’ve used it at Home Depot and Dicks Sporting Goods this week alone

Academy will spool the line on my reel for me. Amazon won't do that.

I doubt it would have made it even if every nostalgic person shopped there considering the mountain of debt they were under.

Le Jouet is the shite for last minute birthday presents. I just tell the clerk gender and age of the kid, what the kid is into, and price. They will get it, wrap it, and send me on my way.

You'll see the same articles currently written about Toys R us being written about best buy, Dicks, Academy, etc. in 5-10 years. Many of the customers that go in those stores now use them as show rooms, and then they go home to Amazon and buy them cheaper. Retail in general is free advertising for Amazon.

That's part of it but the sale of Toys R Us in 2005 to private equity companies was what really started the downfall.
quote:

Bain and two partners, KKR and Vornado Realty Trust, bought Toys “R” Us in 2005 in a leveraged buyout, using $1.3 billion of their own cash and $5.3 billion in debt. The debt weighed heavily on Toys “R” Us, as it made between $450 and $500 million in annual debt-service payments, along with advisory and management fees to the private-equity overlords.Over the lifetime of the arrangement, Bain, KKR, and Vornado managers took in $470 million, money workers helped the company earn.

But wait, that's less than the 1.3 billion they put up.

quote:

Yes, the owners lost the original investment of $1.3 billion. But the $470 million in management fees softened the blow. And when you add in deductions for interest payments and tax write-offs of the principal, and the fact that the losses were borne on private equity investors rather than the firms themselves, you discover what Marketplace found: that Bain and KKR took home at least $15 million from a company they hollowed out and sunk.

Now the rest of America can feel the pain North Louisiana kids felt when Howard Griffin went away and took their Land O' Toys with them.
