re: General Motors Won't Give Up On Sedans

If there’s an economic dislocation in the United States - an oil price spike, a hard recession that makes expensive trucks unaffordable - Ford’s dead. They have ZERO international sales to rely on and don’t even make cars anymore. They’ve painted themselves into a corner. For as long as American consumer tastes stay the same and the domestic economy keeps roaring, they’re fine. But they’re like a person with a brain aneurysm: one day it’s going to pop and bam, it’ll all be over.

Fuel efficient sedans become much more popular when gas prices climb.
Kind of the whole point of Ford and others exiting. The government has made it really hard to build sedans that hit price points and fuel efficiency.

I had an Impala rental car for an extended time due to work and I loved that car.
The upgraded interiors are actually very nice

If that’s true, then why aren’t Toyota, Hyundai, VW, and GM abandoning the sedan market?

Actually the turbo Malibu runs pretty good. 14.9 seconds in the quarter mile and will run 150 miles an hour according to Road &track magazine. It also has 297 lbs of torque. Not bad for a 4 cylinder!

It’s not entirely that. They figured out that they could make minivans without sliders and call them SUVs, which don’t carry the minivan stigma. That, combined with fuel economy gains from engine and transmission technologies, killed the desire for cars since these minivans dressed up as trucks have higher seating positions than cars and now offer similar gas mileage.

That’s definitely quick. Is that the 2.0 liter engine?

I have a Ford Fusion as a company car. It’s the worst POS I’ve ever driven in my life. That car is just terrible in every way.

I’m still pissed that they turned the Explorer into a minivan.

Maybe similar to sedans from 30 years ago. The new Malibu and Accord can get 36 mpg on the highway. I don’t see a Ford Edge or Explorer touching that.

Why would anybody get a Malibu when Camry and Accord are about the same price with much better resale value?
maybe because they love america and they arent trying to drag america down by buying cars made in communist china?

Compare that vulnerable as hell business model to Toyota, which sells cars, light trucks, and Hino heavy trucks from Santiago to Timbuktu or Honda, which is an international car player
people in other countries can't even afford cars

Just googled the new ones.
I would seriously consider a 2.0L Turbo Malibu with that upgraded interior. The 2019 model looks really nice.

My parents have one of the newer Impalas and they seem to really like it.
I have pictures.

Car and Driver clocked 14.7 in the 1/4 mile at 97mph and a top speed of 156 mph.
That top speed is especially unusual for that class of car. I had no idea that a Malibu could do that.

Was talking to a guy that commutes from BR to Lafayette and back every day. He picked up a Malibu in 2011 or 2012, and has put 280K crossing the Basin on it with no major issues. He said he just wants to see how long it will go at this point.

They are being short sighted by canceling sedans in the US.
I don’t know. They don’t want to keep making products that people don’t want.

Toyota, Hyundai, VW
Hyundai and VW don’t sell trucks in the US.
Toyota has let the Tundra wither on the vine. It is an old outdated product that sells in much lower numbers than Ford, GM, and FCA.
The Tacoma is a strong seller.
Toyota also sells a shite-ton of SUV’s.
