All I’ve driven is trucks for the last 18 years but I’ve relocated and now have to rent cars for work. I drove a fully loaded 2018 Chevy impala with a V6 for a couple months. The car was sweet and would haul arse. I’d defintely buy one.

Yea...the Stinger GT. Incredible ride, only downside is the badge. The only reason to even consider a Malibu is if they offer massive discounts, which they do all the time. ANY GM car should be the last choice on shop list. The depreciation on GM vehicles are horrendous.

*oh, & I do know a lot about cars.

The traditional 3-box sedan is probably on the way out. Mercedes and BMW might try to fight for the space at the high end. I think even Toyota/Lexus, which still makes a ton of sedans are moving to shed some models or at least replace them with 4-door coupes and move towards more crossovers.

It is striking that Honda is perceived as more of a truck/crossover company now than ever before.

The market has spoken.

The economy is at an all time high right now and unemployment is at an historic low. When the economy cools people will buy less suv's and more cars. I don't really see that as that complicated as it's pretty much a proven fact. Now, how long we will run this hot, it's hard to tell, but if GM is still making sedans when that happens they will outsell the other makers by a lot.

Inflation is a real thing. A $20k truck from years ago would cost more today even if nothing else changed.

The only difference between a sedan and crossover is the trunk/hatchback switch.

Those things are beasts and that body style looks great.

My one complaint about the Tahoe from that era (and all American cars from back then) was the interior quality. The new ones are much nicer.

I don’t think General Motors put any real effort into their mid sized cars until the late 1990s (Intrigue, Regal, etc) and definitely not in their compact cars until 2008 or 2009 (Cruze, Volt, Verano, Sonic). They’ve always done well with trucks and large cars.

They usually focus on higher margin products and until the recession they may have actually lost money on compact cars.

For sedans, Ford will come out with a good car, like the 1986 Taurus or 2010 Fusion, then let the design age and not update it for way too long while the Japanese and GM will update more frequently. Their current sedan lineup needs a major update, but they are opting to abandoning it instead.

This link is specifically about gas prices but it shows useful graphs. As gas and other commodities rise, or income falls people buy cheaper more fuel efficient cars.

Buick makes good, quiet cars. I wish they were more daring and creative with their designs. I like the new Regal GS, but the interior styling is really just okay. It’s an Opel designed car built in Germany and optimized for Europe. It shows in the relative blandness but overal high quality of the car.

Buick buyers tend to be pretty well off, older, loyal to both the brand and the dealers, and more likely to pay cash. They tend to have a better philosophy on maintenance than most buyers.

Without reading this whole thread, Ford is making huge mistake. Just like when they got rid of the ranger. Chevy and Toyota took the small truck business. Fusions sell like crazy up north

You really should have ready your own link:

”People change the cars they buy, but not all that much,” Busse explains. “The study tells us that they’re not going to abandon SUVs and pickup trucks entirely if gasoline prices go up.

It's cheap and can be had with all wheel drive. It's a decent car for the snow belt.

That is effectively what todays large SUVs and trucks are.

I would argue that Americans are returning to the norm of buying large, comfortable vehicles. The sports sedan had its day but that isn’t where America’s heart is for vehcles.

As the years go by, the crossovers and suv’s get more and more “carlike “. So in a way, sedans aren’t really going away.
