General Motors Won't Give Up On Sedans
LINK
General Motors’ major American competition, in the form of Ford and Fiat Chrysler, have seen the writing on the wall and bet big on Crossover Hell being the future. While those other guys are exiting the sedan game and introducing a new crossover for every day of the week, GM hasn’t given up on the car buyer, and in fact sees sedans and small cars as a good way to hook them for life.
Sedans and coupes are selling in comparatively low numbers—even Honda cars have dropped below Honda truck sales—but, it’s still big business.
Ford and Chrysler have announced that they will exit the sedan market in the US to focus on crossovers. General Motors thinks they can benefit from this by capturing some of the sales that may have otherwise gone to their competitors.
quote:
“It’s a pretty big opportunity for us,” Steve Majoros, Chevrolet’s marketing director for cars and crossovers said at the launch of the new Chevrolet Malibu RS last week, “As other people are making noise about leaving the car business or thrifting back their portfolio, there’s still business to be had there. It’s just going about the business in a smart fashion.”
“There’s still volume to be had there,” Majoros continued. “We’ve done a nice job about taking a responsible approach to the product. If other competitors are leaving, we’re very happy to pick up that business, and we’ll certainly do that.”

They'll be thankful they're making sedans when the economy slows down.

I was thinking that having a diversified portfolio of products would be beneficial when there are changes in fuel prices.
Fuel efficient sedans become much more popular when gas prices climb.

Mid sized cars like the Malibu and Camry seem very popular among ride shares.

Why would anybody get a Malibu when Camry and Accord are about the same price with much better resale value?

I buy a ton of fusions for company vehicles, was disappointed to heard I won’t be able to get them anymore. Will look at GM

Fusion is a good car. Surprised they are canceling it.
Not as big of a fan of their Taurus. The newer Chevy Impala is much better, and doesn’t have that stupid feature where the engine shuts off at a light.

I have a Chevy Malibu. Great car! Smooth and fast. I don’t know why crossovers are so popular unless it’s because of seat height? I bet you won’t see any Japanese companies abandoning the car market!

May as well take advantage of your competitor’s missteps.
I think it’s a mistake for Ford to stop selling sedans.

The Malibu is most similar to the Fusion in price and size. It’s a good, sturdy car. Not very sporty or fast but very practical.
Buick would be a little nicer and a little more expensive.

Why not, SUVs and trucks aren't for everyone..
I think Ford is screwing up giving up on them...

The new ones are surprisingly quiet and comfortable.

When's the last time you rode in a Malibu..?
And I would say the Impala is more compared to a Camry and Accord...
Malibus are more comparable to Corollas and Civics....

Malibus are like Corollas..
The Chevy Cruze is the small one, approximately the size of a Jetta or Corolla.
The Malibu is sort of in between the Impala and Cruze in size. The new Impala is a massive car with a huge trunk.

I had an Impala rental car for an extended time due to work and I loved that car. It had some giddy-up-and-go and I ran the hell out of that car.

Impalas are sneaky fast cars. They don’t look like they can scoot, but they can.

My parents have one of the newer Impalas and they seem to really like it.

People here would never believe it because their trucks sell so well in this country, but Ford is a company in retrograde. Check out their puny stock price. $9.97!!! They hardly sell anything in Europe anymore and they never sold anything in Asia. They have zero international presence, so they’re incapable of growing, which is why nobody wants to invest in them. Basically, they live and die entirely by their ability to sell trucks in the United States. That’s scary as hell. Compare that vulnerable as hell business model to Toyota, which sells cars, light trucks, and Hino heavy trucks from Santiago to Timbuktu or Honda, which is an international car player plus a manufacturer of zillions of motorcycles, which are much more popular in less advanced countries, plus generators, lawnmowers, boat engines, etc.

I am honestly surprised at how far behind Ford and Chrysler are in China. VW and even GM are eating them alive there.
They are being short sighted by canceling sedans in the US.
